I received a notice regarding updating Avast today and so said OK. The program updated to version 5.0.462 without a problem. However, as soon as mail arrived in Outlook Express I got numerous error messages that said this type of connection cannot be checked for viruses and to disable SSL/TLS.
First, I don’t know how to disable SSL/TLS. I have looked through the OE settings and see nothing. Second, it does not sound like a very smart idea to disable a secure connection.

avast will do the SSL and not Outlook express
I am receiving POP messages from both bellsouth.net and gmail.com.
don`no about bellsouth but Gmail is using SSL
so if you want avast to scan your Gmail you have to remove the SSL settings in Outlook express
( Gmail are scanning all in/out mail on gmail server with McAfee and authentium virus scanner ) dono what bellsouth is doing
if not you can remove a “tic” in avast settings and the notification dissapear
I have no such problems with OE and avast 5.0.462.
Tools, Accounts, Select one account, Properties, Advanced, see image. Uncheck the two arrowed SSL options if they are checked, avast handles the encryption if required.
Let me know if these SSL options are already unchecked.
The SSL options were checked. I unchecked them and sent some messages to myself and when they came back I did not get the error message. So, it looks like that fixed the error messages. Thanks.
