7-zip (7z423.exe) download

I need some assistance. I was advised to download the 7z423.exe file, which I did, in order to open the HijackThis program. I installed the 7z423 file. I right-clicked on the 7z423 icon, but there are many options to choose from. I need someone to outline the necessary steps so I can use it to open HijackThis. Thanks, Megman

Please don’t open multiply threads about the same issue. Stay one in one and wait. We’re doing it for free and trying to help. Don’t make our work harder, please.

Exactly, he has now created three new topics for this problem, four if you consider the original thread that he jump from. I’m tired of chasing round and am very close to giving up on the chasing game.

7-zip is no different than WinZIP (except it’s way better).
Just install it, go to Tools\Options.
On System tab select archive types that 7-zip should handle by default.
Under Plugins tab select 7-zip and click Options. Now select Integrate 7-zip to shel context menu. Just click Ok till you get out of menus.
Now just doubleclick HiJackThis archive and it should automatically open in 7-zip.
You can also right-click it and select 7-zip and then Extract to…

RejZor, thanks for trying. You said, “Just install it, go to Tools\Options,” but there’s none. I don’t know what you’re talking about. Where do you find it? I already have the 7z423.exe file downloaded, and that’s it. I clicked on the HijackThis zip file, and the WinZip window appeared and not the 7-zip window. So I need more clarification. Thanks, Megaman

You must be kidding or I don’t know what…

How possibly can it be that your 7-zip has no options ? Take a look at the screenshot and reopen your 7-zip program one more time… voila ! Optios are there after all…

Edit: Don’t tell me you downloaded 7z423.exe and you didn’t install it at all… just left it downloaded. What did you expect, that program will autoinstall itself ? Well, no… you have to install it just like any other program, just like WinZIP… and btw, I have no clue why you even bother with 7-zip when you already have WinZIP installed. WinZIP handles ZIP files better than any other compression utility.

Open your WinZIP program, go to FILE (drop down menu at the top of the window) and chose OPEN ARCHIVE. Now, locate your hijackthis zip file (wherever you saved it on your local hard drive) and load it into WinZIP. Once zip file is loaded, go to drop down menu again and click on ACTIONS… Chose EXTRACT… and when new window opens, it will ask you where you want to save extracted files from the zip file. Chose some location that you can easily remember, and click EXTRACT button. That’s it.

Close WinZIP and locate the folder where you extracted those files. Go there and start HIJACKTHIS… that’s it…

I’d like to throw my 2 cents worth in here.
As has already been mentioned, HijackThis isn’t a toy.
Judging by the problems you’re having with a simple program installation,
I highly recommend that you not attempt to use HJT unless you are prepared
to possibly re-install windows.
I know this advice is harsh but at least right now you still have a working operating system.

Bob, I see you posted my mind… HijackThis isn’t a toy… Take care guys…
We’re patient and kind but we must know our limits and get prudent.
Wanting to be good we can mess all around in her computer.

Craftec, thanks for the info. I’m going to uninstall 7-zip and uninstall HijackThis. From what Bob3160 shared in his post, I shouldn’t use HijackThis. Also, you mentioned that WinZip is better than any other “zips,” including 7-zip.

I was told in one of the forums that 7-zip is better than WinZip. Perhaps it’s just personal preference. Anyways, I’m going to uninstall 7-zip. Thanks for the help. I no longer have to post any 7-zip or HijackThis posts. Megaman

No I don’t remember anyone mentioned anything about 7-zip being better than WinZIP, just because it’s not true. 7-zip is just better in a way because it’s FREE, and WinZIP is not free.

7-zip is just a new baby in this world, and people like it because it’s free.

Okay. I looked in the Add/Remove Programs Properties “window” and I didn’t see WinZip in there, so I don’t know if my friend’s computer has it or not. Earlier when I tried to open HijackThis in WinZip, the WinZip window appeared with options, but I don’t know if it’s active or not. How do I find out if the computer has WinZip? Thanks, Megaman

If you try to open zip file and WinZIP wizzard pops out, then you have it… also, take a look in your PROGRAM FILES folder. It should be in its default directory, naturally… called WinZIP. I’m sure you have it.

I checked the Programs folder and there is WinZip folder with WinZip 8.0, but I don’t know if that’s the most current WinZip. So the computer has it. Thanks, Megaman
