a setting problem i think

i have always used ad vast and love it. it was recently installed on a new pc and now every time it scans the results are always the same cannot scan file please help me i think i alredy have viruses in my pc

Hi, welcome to the forum.
Do you mean that it scans normally, and at the completion of the scan the report has a few of these “unable to scan…” entries?
That can be quite normal, depending on the filename and path. Anything that has some of its file structure encrypted/password protected can not be scanned. Looking at the file name and path by moving the scan report headers (click and drag) can give you an idea as to whether that’s a concern or not.

If it’s not completing a scan, or gets stuck on a file, that’s different, please advise.

thank you to tarq57 for at least replying to my post upon its completion of the scan it is pages of unable to scan i can tell something is not right like befor when it scanned the outcome was totaly different. now it is unable to scan any file could it be a setting i dont have right thank you so much again i am really worried about this.

No problem.
Need some more information to help you resolve this.
You say it was installed on a new PC. After it was first installed, did it scan normally, but now (some time after installation) it doesn’t?
What is the OS (operating system) of the PC?
Was any other AV installed on it? (A lot of new PC’s come with an AV already installed - typically Norton or McAfee.)
Does the blue ball with the “a” in it appear in the system tray? (bottom right of the screen. Should look like the picture.)
When you scan with Avast, does it appear to scan normally, and complete?
Have you modified any of the settings?
Are you running from an admin account, and how many user accounts on the computer?
Why do you think you have viruses?

Now to the scan report. Are you looking at the report following a scan, and seeing a large number of “unable to scan” entries? Or is every entry like that?
-Move the headers in the scan report viewer around until you can read the information why it is unable to scan a particular file. Often it will be something like “the file is password protected” The path and file name can also show why it may be unable to scan.

Edited above post to show picture of system tray.
(The icons are the connection, Threatfire, Sounds, Safely Remove Hardware, Avast, (rotates while scanning), and the date/time (customized).
