A visit from - Sirefef-AHF Trj

Hello,

New poster here. Got a computer infected with SIREFEF-AHF that won’t go away. Tried scanning with MBAM and Avast Free! in safe mode. Both of them discover malware, but once removed it’s still there.

Followed the sticky (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0) as much as possible, attaching logs. Couldn’t get a log from aswMBR.exe as the program kept crashing during scanning.

Thankful for assistance in removing this virus.

Regards,
dehace

you may try running aswMBR in safe mode

I did run it in safe mode, without network. Found something and crashed, 3 times.

Ran avast scan in safe mode which found this:

Win32:Sirefef-PL [Rtk]
2 infected files:
C:\windows\assembly\GAC_32\desktop.ini
C:\windows\assembly\GAC_64\desktop.ini

deleted both, have a feeling theyll be back soon :frowning:

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

See next post for fix continuance

THEN

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

No luck I’m afraid.

I ran both OTL and Combofix as instructed, attaching the combofix log. It’s in swedish, due to Combofix being in swedish. Anyway, once I’d done that Windows wouldn’t run. Had to perform a system repair which meant system restore, and after that I had to reinstall Avast. Not only that, both Sirefef Trj and Rtk was back too.

Do you want another OTL log?

Thanks so far.

Regards,
dehace

When you say windows wouldn’t run do you mean this ?

  1. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

No, I mean that I couldn’t even get into windows. It loaded as usual, then rebooted and I was taken to the startup screen where I could choose to launch startup repair or start windows normally. Tried starting normally 3 times before I launched startup repair, which suggested a system restore. Maybe I should’ve tried safe mode as well, but I’m not sure it would’ve done any good.

OK that would suggest to me that services is being particularly obnoxious this time around

OK could you download the following programme to a USB drive
Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64

Restart the computer press F8
At the menu select “repair my computer”

Select Command prompt

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/RepairVista_7277.jpg

Insert the USB with FRST on it

At the command prompt type the following :

notepad and press Enter.
The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
Select “Computer” and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
In the command window type e:\frst64.exe and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
The tool will start to run.
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Alright, I’ll try that tonight and get back here with results.

Here is the FRST-log.

Regards,
dehace

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same USB drive as FRST
Restart the computer as before to the recovery console…
Run FRST and click Fix

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/Farbar/FRST2.gif

A log will be generated on the USB drive

Reboot to normal windows

Once there then please run OTL and post the log along with the FRST fix log

Here we go.

How is the computer behaving now ?

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Running a scan with avast now, no safe mode. I’ll check back here with results. Here’s the log from OTL with the quick scan.

OK once Avast has completed then re-run Combofix as it will carry out some repairs, allow it to update if requested

Ran Avast (in normal Windows, no safe mode) which found nothing, so everything seems fine. Should I still run combofix?

As Avast came up clean then there is no need for Combofix

How is the computer behaving ?

Everything seems fine at the moment. Gonna keep an eye out for any suspicious behaviour for the next couple of days.

Huge thanks for your effort, really saved me from a very complicated reinstallation.

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:Commands [resethosts] [emptytemp] [Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Remove ComboFix

[*]Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
[*]In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall (Notice the space between the “x” and “/”) then click OK

[]Follow the prompts on the screen
[
]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Go to control panel
[*]Select folder options (Appearance > Folder options in category view)
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.
