AAVM: RPC error

Hi all
I am getting following error since long time, Avast do not start (a red circle on avast icon in system tray)

I am having P3, 1.13 GHz, Win XP SP2.

“The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error”

No particular steps taken to reproduce this error. Only regular use.

I am having this sticky and frustrating problem from more than one and half year. Every time I uninstalled and reinstalled Avast; still the “AAVM: RPC system” error persists. Even scanning the discs for error don’t help.

About avast box shows under VPS node “can not obtain information. The system can not find the file specified”.

----- Following are lines from error.log and warning.log file for two consecutive days---------------

I will be thankful to all for suggesting a solution

Thank you.
Lalit.

After some searching the forum I think the rpc error could be related to a previous AV installed or remnants

  1. Did you have any previous antivirus software?

  2. If so how did you remove it?

It may be necessary to remove the previous AV components using their un-installer

Once this is done, re-install avast and see if it works

Hope this helps

----Also SP3 has been availiable for some time now and not updating will leave you vulnerable to attack----

HI Scott

Thanks for the comments.

I already said I have done all the install uninstall procedures to no avail. The problem still’s there.
I uninstalled it normally and used avast’s removal tool too, every time I rebooted. Then installed avast again.

It runs fine for sometime, but again shows RPC error.
RPC service is running in widows.

I guess avast don’t keep backup of its previous defs and installs all defs again.
I can’t afford to download all these defs overall again. I cancel the updates and this may one of the reasons.

Avast should keep a backup of previous defs.

Thanks.

Please, answer which was your old antivirus and how did you uninstall it.
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Do you use a firewall? Which one?

Also, take a look into Administrative Tools > Services
and see how the four avast services are set to start (automatically or manual).
