First of all, feeling extremely guilty that my work computer has been compromised, somewhat relieved that it is only affecting my being able to access my personal emails on that computer and praying that I can handle it myself without bringing the techs in.
I have AVG on the computer and did download Malwarebytes. Did total scans with each - nothing detected - no change.
Did a search and found an answer on eHow suggesting that I go to another computer, not infected and download Avast anti-virus and malware protection and copy it to a CD. I need an “apples and oranges” explanation on how to copy this to a CD. Do I use drag and drop, right click copy and paste. Would it work copying it to a flash drive?
The instructions for the “fix” said not to download Avast from the internet to the infected computer, but use the CD to install it.
Reading through some of the other posts on this subject earlier, some people said that Avast did not detect it and suggested Malwarebytes and Superantispyware.
Okaye…I am rambling now. How can I get rid of this! Thank you for your help.
Back again one day later…I ran another full scan with Malwarebytes and it detected a rogue.installer. I was actually relieved to see that something was detected. I removed it and restarted the computer. Nothing has changed.
When I go to my Yahoo mail, I get the header and an empty screen. It shows either Done or about:blank. I cannot close out without using the Task Manager.
If you can’t download avast! to the infected computer, you will need to add the installation file to a data CD. A USB thumb drive would be easier- but if the computer is infected, bear in mind that the USB drive very likely will be too once you have put it in that computer- don’t forget to scan it when you have installed avast!
Thank you for your answer. When I came back in this morning, the only thing Superantispyware found were 70 cookies which I quarantined. Nothing changed on my Yahoo email.
I installed Firefox and can now get to my email without a problem. Tried again with Internet Explorer and still a problem. I can live with using Firefox since the only problem was with my personal email.
One last question: I now have AVG, Malwarebytes and Superantispyware on both my work computer and my private one. Should I also add Avast; are these sufficient or am I going into overkill??
These forums are meant to help people using Avast ; IF you wish to continue
using AVG, you should go to THEIR Support Forums at http://www.avgforums.com/ .
To answer your question which does involve Avast :
It is not recommended to use more than one resident anti-virus program on a computer as they will conflict with each other as 2 dogs would over one bone. Both AVG and Avast are resident av programs.
So, you will have to use either AVG or Avast … but not both.
