accelerators & proxys

I can’t believe how many questions I seem to have!! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m currently using Kerio, AVAST HOME, Counterspy, Adaware, Spywareblaster and Microsoft’s Antispyware beta1.

I’m also using Tiscali’s Accelerator (Onspeed by any other name, I believe).

Since I believe that Avast channels everything through a proxy server, if I use the Accelerator, which also channels through a proxy, will Avast be bypassed??

The reason I ask is that in the Kerio Configuration window, without the Accelerator on, incoming and outgoing activity is shown through Avast. With the Accelerator on,all activity is shown through the Accelerator, while the Avast section shows NO activity.

Thanks for any insights.

WebShield providers scans ONLY HTTP traffic.

If you uncheck the option ‘Ignore local communication’ AND add the port used by the Accelerator into the WebShield properties, it won’t be bypassed.

You’re helping me with everything, thanks!

I’m afraid I’m very new to this, and my knowledge is very limited :-[

I take it that your reply means that when I have the accelerator on, I’m not protected at present by Avast?!?

Could you clarify the changing of the settings please. On the “on-access protection control”, the webshield is at present set to high (as are all). Under customize/basic, the redirected HTTP port reads 80, there are no ignored addresses, and the “ignore local communication” box is checked.

I understand that I should uncheck the “ignore…” box, but what about the accelerator port? Does that replace the “80”?

The settings for the accelerator are:

Remote server hostname - accelerator.tiscali.co.uk
Server Port - 7000
Local Listening Port - 5400

Assuming that you are kind enough to help me with this and I change the settings according to your instructions, what would happen if I then DIDN’T use the accelerator at any time? Would I still be protected, or would I need to change the settings each time, dependent on whether I used the accelerator or not?

Also, and I’m aware that this is becoming a bit like a “How do I use my PC?” question-and-answer session, and I’m sorry for that, but have you any idea what I’m lacking in the way of software that is not allowing me to view your attachment in your reply? I get a “page cannot be displayed” when I click on it.

I’d be very grateful, when you compose any replies, if you’d assume that you are explaining things to a 5 year-old, so that I’ll be able to understand you.

Many thanks for all your help.

Yes  as the accelerator uses a proxy…
All these so-called accelerators just compress web pages, and compress images more, tests show only 20% increase in speed. already compressed stuff such as ZIPs, MP3s and so on have no increase in speed at all.

WebShield is at present set to high > Ok (this won’t change what we’re doing)
The redirected HTTP port reads 80 > change to 5400 (http://www.tiscali.co.uk/help/accelerator/troubleshooting.html#install_1)
There are no ignored addresses > Ok
The “ignore local communication” box is checked > uncheck it
Boot

Test it  It’s all a problem of browsing SPEED.
I mean, avast can protect you without WebShield (although it’s very useful as it blocks any infection BEFORE it reaches the disk).
You can use avast with and without the accelerator. The problem is that I don’t believe it’s accelerating anything…
If you set avast to use it, change your avast settings as above. If it does not work, or worth, change your avast settings back, uninstall the accelerator and boot

Did what you said, Tech.

Having changed the settings, Kerio still showed traffic going through the accelerator and not Avast. I think I’ll just put up with my dial-up crawling at times and know I’m being protected.

Any idea as to why I can’t view your attachment?

Hi GrahamE,

The attachment is the same as the picture in Tech’s post above. You can see the picture, right?

I had no trouble viewing the attachment itself so I am not sure why you can not.

No, I have a square with a red cross. I can see yours though.

Try forcing a page load, hold the shift key and click the refresh button.

Or clear your browsers temporary internet files.

No, still nothing after doing both those things, DavidR. I can see yours and CharleyO’s, but not Tech’s.

As a follow-up to the above, I’ve checked out a few other posts, and some avatars are visible, some aren’t, so its not just Tech’s that I can’t see.

  1. You should test another browser, like Firefox.
  2. If it does not work, the guilty here is Kerio, for sure. Disable it, open the browser and then start this page again…

I’m feeling refused as you can’t see my avatar :‘( :’( ;D

It sometimes happens if the images are stored somewhere like photobucket.com and others if their servers are having a problem or undergoing maintainence, etc.

The problem with that is that Tech’s avatar is stored on the servers for forum.avast.com so that shouldn’t be the problem or you might not have been able to see the image he posted to help you, or didn’t you see that ?

I will post it again as a jpg file as see if that works (shouldn’t be any different though).

Ack … Graham thought I meant our avatar pictures! Sorry about that, Graham. :-[

Thanks David, for posting a jpg of the picture I really meant in my above post. Although, you are right. It should work as a gif or jpg … unless there is a reason Graham can not see gif’s. I just noticed my avatar is a jpg.

Wait … I just checked David’s, it is a gif, and Graham says he sees it. ???
So, that is not it … but now we are off topic, I think.

:stuck_out_tongue: Yeah, its Kerio. Once disabled I could see all of the stuff that you lot could see that Tech had posted to help me!

Thanks to everyone for your help.

That’s one smooth avatar, Tech! 8)

I know many here use Kerio and have no problems with it. Perhaps another firewall would work better for you and your computer. I use ZoneAlarm Free but there are others.

Anyway, glad you now have the problem and solution in hand.

Oh yeah… it’s from Sasha (S.Z.Craftec), our avatar master
