ADNM installer cant find SQLEXPRESS

Hi,

Im evaluating ADNM for migrating from mcafee (unmanaged) to avast managed.

I have installed a server with SQLEXPRESS with default instance
I have enabled tcp and named pipes services for remote connecting.

I have WSUS installed on the databaseserver without problems
I can make ODBC connection to the server from the server where i want to install ADNM on, with connection testing it works great
(User DSN as well as System DSN)

When i install ADNM however, i get the message as show in attachment ScreenHunter_03 Aug. 07 14.23.gif and ScreenHunter_03 Aug. 07 14.24.gif

To verify that i can have connection and can create and drop databases on the server see attachment ScreenHunter_03 Aug. 07 14.30.gif and ScreenHunter_03 Aug. 07 14.32.gif

I tried installing ADNM on a seperate server and on the SQL server itself, both come up with above problem.

I refuse to install MSDE on any of the servers becuz this is what i have SQLEXPRESS for.

if this problem gets solved i can start pressing my boss for clearing money to buy about 9 server licenses (1 for exchange also) and for about 100 desktops (which will grow in the near future).

I have looked on the forum here and saw several people with about the same problem, but they had some AMS Maintenance tool
which i dont have (or at least dont know how to obtain)

any lightshedding on this subject is very appreciated

btw: maybe i may suggest in the next ADNM release to improve the SQLSERVER detection and configuration during installation and maybe more documentation about this part.?

You should configure SQL Server to use mixed authentication (using login “sa”), ADNM doesn’t support SQL Server with NTLM authentication only.
The correct server name on ADNM setup page is NEBULA, and user name should be “sa” with appropriate strong password.

i tried that also, but unfortuanately it doesnt work

still get the same error

i tried it on the database server itself and on the other server.
both give the same error as in my original posting

from the error log after cancelling the installation:

08.08.2008 09:37:26 system: *: Going to check connection to MS SQL Server “NEBULA”, using user “sa”…
08.08.2008 09:37:27 system: Cannot initialize data source, error 0x80004005…

ps: thank you for the quick reply

Any news? I have the same error.

Just wondering. what version 2005, 2005 SP1, 2008?

I had asked elsewhere about 2008 compatibilities and never got a response.

2005 SP2 server (not express)

ok im back from vacation

i try to install this on:

VMWARE machine
Windows Server 2003
SQL Express 2005 (latest download version)

im goin to give it another try now, so we will see what happens now

i used VMWARE for testing so i reset my image to a clean install of the OS

i installed SQLEXPRESS 2005 as a named instance (dbserver: NEBULA\SQLEXPRESS) and made sure the SA account could login…

there is no problem with installing avast ADNM now

im planning to try to install sqlexpress as a default (instead of named instance) including the SA authentication to see what happens
but first im goin to write an evaluation report about the software for buying and installing it as replacement of our mcafee…

Did you installed ADNM on the same mashine as SQL ?

yeah i installed the ADNM on the same machine as the SQLEXPRESS

i found a FAQ on the ADNM pages now which also states that SQLEXPRESS has to be installed as a named instance and with the mixed authentication enabled…

if u follow this guideline the ADNM will install good

there is no problem with SQL and ADNM on the same mashine. I have problems then SQL is on a separate server.

did u fill in like this: SERVER\INSTANCE

the instances must be named i figured, if its not a named instance i guess the installer cant install… but that also depends on the version of MSSQL u use from what i understood from the faq on the page of ADNM

“…It is recommended to install the SQL Server as a named instance…”
I use default instance on SQL 2005 SP2 and need to use windows authentication.

Anyone from avast team reading this forum ?
