AIS 5 vs. Windows Defender (Win7)

Should I disable Windows defender in Win7-64bit when running AIS. Do they conflict at all or slow things down more? I have disabled the Win Firewall.

Thanks…

imo, yes u should disable defender.
conflicts can happen, also slowing of ur sys.

I got avast! Free here running Windows Defender. Never heard major conflict with the others versions of avast! too.

Let Windows Defender on. I never seen any 1 to turn off Windows Defender because of his anti virus or any problem.

i’ve seen many. but, anyways it’s up to you…

Its strange but its contrary to me. I suggest to try to let it leave for like a month and if u didnt got any problem then dont matter of it.

even if it doesn’t conflict with avast, it uses system resources. and u don’t need it, when running avast, but as stated above - do as u like.

me its only use 7,552 K lol so its really no so much. That why i dont care.

doesn’t mean that r the only resources needed running/working it.
u would have 2 monitor its behavior over time 2 get right results.
even the system slowing would not b logged anywhere, when defender and avast scan a file the same time or one after the other. but since u obviously r runnig a rather fast system… seems 2 work ok 4 u!
but please don’t 4get. there r older, slower systems out there…

I have been running Avast 5 with Windows Defender in my sister’s computer with windows vista with no solow downs and both run very well…rm

see anti-spyware test result with Avast 5 >>> http://picasaweb.google.com/logoswebalbums/AvastSpycarTest?feat=directlink

you can do the test there:

I’m not running Windows 7, rather Windows XP SP3. I have both avast! 5 Free and Windows Defender running with no conflicts at all. Also, the memory usage of Windows Defender appears to be minimal at best. If you are not experiencing any problems I would recommend that you leave Defender turned on.

I have never seen Windows Defender slow a system down or conflict with any Antivirus/Malware program using Vista or Windows 7. I never really played with WD installed on XP so I cant comment. Could WD cause slow downs and or a conflict, its possible? Why turn WD off unless you have problems. WD and Avast together should increase protection as WD monitors system changes Avast 5 does not. Also you double the malware protection.

My 2 cents

I turned off WD then installed ThreatFire, is better than WD and does not have any kind of conflict.

Thanks for the discussion everyone. I guess it will come down to testing. There may not be obvious conflicts, but I am interested in system responsiveness. If I can’t tell a difference, I’ll leave it on.

Hate to disagree, but that advice strikes me as no more than mere opinion with no evidence of any sort of foundation to support it.

PC’s are what I do for a living. The next time I see Windows Defender (which is built into Vista and 7) conflict with an anti-virus application will be the first. If you can point to any reliable (not mere anecdote and supposition) evidence anywhere that this is an issue with WD and any well-made antivirus product from any reputable vendor, I’d like to see it.

My advice is to leave Windows Defender running.

WD is built in to Vista and 7 so avast! 5 disables the real-time scanning component when installed.

MSE does that - disable automatically and completely Defender - but I never noticed that Avast did, not even the real time scanning part. This said, Defender is completely useless when Avast is installed.

I keep Windows Defender updated through its portal:
Latest definition version: 1.79.583.0
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Definitions/ADL.aspx

Well even in old pc or new pc i alway keep WD turned on without slow down or notice that its was conflict with avast! or anything else.
