Perhaps I am missing a major advantage here. It would not be the first time.
I have read the site referenced in the URL and it appears it is a way of saving to media this month’s updates. Just this month’s updates … did I miss something more valuable?
The admin working with mutliple systems and some of them in a different language or even different OS versions, possibly even without internet access ? Then it makes sense IMO.
But this reminded me of Autopatcher or what was that program called ? Does it still exist ?
I was thinking more in the line as for users that have no updates and patches because of MGADiag blocking (those areas most infected with Conficker worm at the moment). They are infecting others because they seems to operate non-legit versions of the Microsoft OS and in this way are endangering other legit users of the software, well they do not have the automatic update tool, and will not do not do so manually, so this is an alternative way for them to be patched,
Why download a whole DVD then for just 3 small patches(those patches are only a few Mb’s big compared to 1GB for the dvd) ? I don’t see the point, just download the 3 patches and put them on a usb key or some other storage device.
Yes i know that and we were talking about what the average user can do with this, we already know it can be usefull for admins.
And again i repeat myself, why would an average home user want to download this huge DVD ? He already knows which OS he has and knows in which language he is SO isn’t he better off with just downloading these 3 small patches which are only a few megabytes in size as opposed to downloading a whole DVD(which is more than a gigabyte large). That’s what i am saying here …
You are right here. And I did not expect otherwise, to be honest.
This is not only a place where normal users read, and for them to be aware of this, knowledge do not hurt you “one byte”, my friend, and that always have been the credo of a man like polonus.
Obscurity is not my scheme, so full awareness of the facts is always the better policy.
But let us imagine you have an international firm, and you have a machine park for which you cannot get regular MS updates or for which the users disabled the auto updates (because they consider this as a nag and they are staff you know, and know better, happened recently in a British hospital remember, and can happily happen anywhere), in that case, you as an admin, aren’t you happy to enforce it in this way and never have to look back? That is why I posted this info here.
And whether this is information not beneficial for the average nanny and granny on the Internet does not interest me one hoot, because for some nannies and grannies in certain situations it can be very beneficial knowledge,
