Annoying Error Message

When I click on some links, I get the following error message:

“The page you are trying to visit has generated an error”

If I back click, most times the page I wanted appears.

I think it may be some kind of spyware or maybe a virus.

Googling it suggested to run Adaware, Spybot etc.

I have done all that. Any suggestions, anyone?

I am running XP home and OE 6 plus IE 6

This seems to be related with script debugging.
You can set the options on IE: Tools > Options > Security > Customized level
Hope this help

Thanks, but what should the correct settings be?

Well, it’s not an easy question… :-\

  1. If you have avast Pro version with Script Blocker provider or another Script security application (for instance, Script Sentry or better, AnalogX Script Defender) you could be safe activating the scripts.

That applications will intercept any request to execute the most common scripting types used in virus attacks, such as Visual Basic Scripting (.VBS), Java Script (.JS), etc and can even be configured to intercept new script extensions as needed! It’s very simple to use and helps to ensure that you do not inadvertently run a script no matter what email program you use, or even if you get it via another method.

Oh, I forget, update Windows completely. Script security updates are necessary.

  1. If you have Home version you could use that applications or disable the scripts. You will lose some HTML features (some functions in some pages won’t work properly) but this is not a major problem I suppose.

Well, by default, I don’t see a reason why the problem should be related to avast! at all. In my opinion, it’s just a faulty/browser incompatible code in the HTML pages. How many pages are affected (I mean, only a few or many)?

The problem was with some nasty spyware. The solution was to scan with “Hijack This” and get advice on which items to remove.

Thank you all for helping me.
