Annoying warning/error messages

I’ve already posted this message but i haven’t got reply.
The problem is that i have disabled the “Internet mail” service and each time i log into my account (member of the user group and so without administative priviledge) i obtain three annoying and subsequent error messages stating that Avast will not protect my incoming mail: these messages are referred respectively to POP, SMTP and IMAP protocol.
If i log in as administrator the messages don’t appear.

Such error were first appeared since 4.5.518 and are still present in 4.5.546.

Why do i receive such messages? I have disabled the Internet Mail (and also Network Shield and Standard Shield and other providers are not installed) but i wanted to do that!
I know this is a particular Avast configuration but i want to use Avast only manually and it doesn’t seems too stange. My computer is a little bit old and even if Avast is lighter than other antivirus software i must save CPU and memory resources.

I use Windows 2000 Professional SP3.

I try to attach an error message image but last time it was failed.
Also this time the 11 KB JPG attachment doesn’t appear in the post!?! Bah! So i copy the error text related to POP protocol (SMTP and IMAP errors are identical): “avast! will not be able to protect incoming mail (POP3 protocol). Error: 10013”.

Cheers.

I have disabled the Internet Mail (and also Network Shield and Standard Shield and other providers are not installed) but i wanted to do that!
Than why do you have a av installed? You have disabled the protection of the av almost entirely!

If you use Outlook Express as email client, than it is not surprising that you get those messages, since you have disabled they Internet mail providre which is used to protect OE.

I’ve have explained why i’ve disabled all the active protection: i want to use Avast only manually on my request due to my limited hardware resources.
I agree with you that Avast is functioning at 1% of its functionality but it is what i need.
Despite what you can think from how i use antivirus software, i’am quite careful with security.

However i use Thunderbird 0.9 as my mail client if it could be useful. Never used Outlook Express.

Are your limited user accounts set to allow email?

Edit

I seem to think that individual email accounts with limited rights need manual setting in T/bird? Feel free to throw a large rock at me if I got this wrong. :wink:

What avast! resident providers do you have installed, actually?

The installed providers are:

  • Internet Mail;
  • Network Shield;
  • Standard Shield.

With Avast 4.5.518 i’ve also tried to activate Internet Mail and Standard Shileld providers, then reboot, then disable them. But the next reboot the error messages reappered.

If you want to use the on-demans scanner only, I suggest to uninstall the Standard Shield provider as well. I think it should avoid the warnings.

I have uninstalled the “Standard Shield” but this not resolved the problem. But if, instead, i uninstall the “Internet Mail” provider (i think you wanted to say this :wink: the error messages disapper.

Now, i understand that this not a so big problem and my Avast configuration is somewhat atipical, but i think that the problem i posted in this thread is a bug (the fact that no error message appears if i login as administrator seems to confirm that). The solution you suggested is a workaround that require to completely remove a functionality. I’ve installed the 3 providers i’ve reported because in some circumstances they could be useful, in particular if i want to test other mail client or if i want to test program that i don’t trust. Before 4.5 all i had to do was to start the provider(s) i needed, without warning/error at the next login. I understand if the error/warning appears trying to stopping the provider or if another program try to do the same thing, but not if i manually configure Avast to do that.

However thanks all for advices and i hope that this little problem will be fixed. I think Avast is a good antivirus and i’m happy if i could partecipate to make it a better product.

Cheers.
