Hi All

It is a rogueware, scum/scam ware I believe, not a virus as such.
I take it it keeps popping up saying yoyr system is infected/at risk, etc. ?
If so - Try this tool, RogueRemover, available here http://www.malwarebytes.org/rogueremover.php.
Hiya David sorry to be a pain
But i too am having trouble getting rid of the XP anitivirus 2008 which keeps popping up on screen although i thought i was convered by Avast, please help as i have tried everything to get rid of it.
Joanne
it’s a fake antivirus with fake virus alerts… it should be covered by avast… we’ve made some detections for older versions of it… could you remember the way, by which you got infected (the URL e.g.)?
But have you tried the tool that I gave the link for ?
You say you have tried everything, unfortunately that doesn’t help us to help you as we have no idea what to suggest (that you might not have tried), so exactly what have you tried ?
Hi david
thanks for the link but it scaned and gave the all clear.
Peter
okaay, try to run HiJackThis and post the log here… it should help us to recognize what’s going on…
Hi Maxx I have attached the report.
thanks for your help.
Peter
This is supposed to be able to remove it. Make sure when you set it up, you do a complete scan.
can you send the file C:\Program Files\Antivirus 2008\Antvrs.exe to virus[at]avast[dot]com? we’ll analyze it and add the detection… meanwhile you can fix this item O4 - HKCU..\Run: [Antivirus] C:\Program Files\Antivirus 2008\Antvrs.exe with HiJackThis and restart your computer…
Hi Maxx
I have sent the flie to you. I think. Let me know if its the wrong one.
thanks very much for your help.

Hi Maxx
thanks you that seems to have gotten rid of the problem. your a ledgend.
Peter
That’s just the reg key you removed. The file would still be on your computer.

yes… but the nasty pseudo-AV is inactive now, we’ll try to add the detection for it asap (or there’s a possibility to manually delete the Antivirus 2008 folder)…
thanks Oldman I will down load it and do a scan.
you guys have been great thanks very much for your help.
Peter
Can Avast 4.8 detect this with it’s WebShield? Someone I know using Rising Antivirus Free was infected with this and used Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to remove it, but it would be good to know if Avast would stop it before it can infect your PC. Thanks.
It isn’t a virus as such (so not currently detected by avast), but a fake alert it is scum/scamware hoping you will buy the solution to a non-existing problem.
SuperAntiSpyware is another option of the RogueRemover program also by malwarebytes.
There is nothing to stop you sending a sample of the file to avast though.
