Is a standalone antivirus needed if I already have Avast Premium Security?

Generally I would say no, I have never felt inclined to have one.
Also by ‘stand alone’ I take it you mean an on-demand scanner and not an on-access scanner as having two on-access antivirus scanners isn’t something to be recommended. Like two dogs fighting over one bone, aka malware.
When you install Avast in a Windows OS then Defender disables its on-access scanning, but you can have it do on-demand scans.
