"Antivirus Number 1" removal

My mother uses your program (the home use version), which she says is currently updated; she also has Adaware and Spybot. I don’t know if they are updated, maybe not. Anyhow, she has “Antivirus Number - 1” on her PC. What a horrible thing, we don’t have a clue to where it came from. She can no longer get an internet connection, but I can download what is needed on my PC. Can you tell me what to do? I can download any kind of remover onto my PC and take it to her, however, I don’t have Avast on my current PC. I have Trend ~ sorry

Thanks!

It is scum/scam ware, that often just throws up fake security alerts, purporting that your system is at risk/infected. It gives either a link to a free scan (usually this is what does the download) and at some point it will probably get you to pay to have the non-existent infection removed. You shouldn’t visit the site or pay.

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode and report the findings (it should product a log file).

when downloading, rather than run the program, can I save to a CD, so I can install it on her PC?

Sure, or a flash drive, or any other type of removable media.

Yes.

However, you should never download and install/run a program in one action, always save to your hard disk (avast should scan it when saved) and after disconnecting from the internet then install and run the program. Not the issue here but a good practice.

[i]Thanks so much. I’ll let you know if I have trouble.

If this came from internet surfing, we know who the perpetrator of this crime is.

If your mother has no internet connection, you will have to download the updates as well.Manually update the programs by double clicking the update files you have transferred.

It didn’t work. When I tried to run the disk, the message said that the files were corrupted. She tried to go back (restore)to a previous day, she was unable. Someone’s coming to look at it, but not until Monday.

Well, if you’re willing to work on it, we might be able to get this fixed for you before you spend money on a technician…

Please check to make sure that the disk can be run on a known good computer.

Maybe the download was corrupt, or the disk is dirty. Maybe even the drive that you’re using is faulty (I’m pulling at straws here, but it’s possible).

Try copying the file from the disk to the computer’s desktop before attempting to run the installation. You may have to rename the file to something else, sometimes viruses will block the installation of products that are made to remove them.

However, if you feel like giving up and want to leave it up to an expert, that’s your choice.

I’ll try more things tomorrow. The disk was brand new, so it’s not that. MY PC is not yet a year old (Yay Vista!). The download is the one that was recommended by the dude here, I used the link on the forum. Could that be it? Specifically the message said the setup files were(or file was) corrupt, I think it also said to use another program. Then I tries to uninstall the bogus antivirus program and that just made it disappear from the program files list, but it’s still in the PC and on the bottom bar. I think there’s another way to try to uninstall it (I think XP has an uninstall wizard window that I can go to, no?) The problem right now is we are pressed for time, but I really do want to be the one to fix it (just because I’m that way). However the guy that’s coming is a friend from my recently ex-job and I can barter dog grooming for pc repair. What a deal… ;D

Download MBAM + SAS and the updates, transfer them to the bad pc via cd. Right click on the installation files, and choose rename.Rename the programs, eg mbam to moon.exe and superantispyware to killvirus.exe.Then double click to install programs.Exit programs.Double click on update files to install updates. Go to C/program files/malwarebytes antimalware, locate mbam.exe and rename, then double click on renamed file to run program, same with SAS.

It seem to be gone. I uninstalled it, then somehow deleted the icon from the tray (bottom right) and now I don’t see it. I was able to get back online after rebooting the router. Perhaps we were lucky this time.

 Hi :

Just to be on the safe side, in case some of “it” is hiding, I recommend you
use the 2 programs that have been recommended, particularly Malwarebytes
Anti-Malware .

Maybe his mother ran MBAM ;D ;D ;D
