antivirus scanning

When I scanned my computer everything was going along fine until it started scanning the D drive it made the computer restart why would this happen? Is there a way that I can stop it from scanning the D drive? If so how would I do it or is this the right thing to do?Please help.Thanks,Bear41

Instead of selecting fixed disks icon use the folder selection icon and just scan drive c:

Culpeper, it took me awhile to figure that out when I first started!! I look back blushing at my “newness!”
Sometimes it’s the simple things that got to me…

I did what you said it worked well and then when I went to close the avast my computer did the same exact thing it restarted, and when I try to play any of my games now since I installed the avast it will only let me play a little while and then the computer restarts again. What could be causing this because I did not have this problem until I installed the avast. What do I do?Thanks,Bear41

Bear41,

Firstly, shut down the On Access protection modules in Avast by right clicking on the A ball and selecting Stop Providers.

Then retry your games.

If the problem still persists, we will need to look into it further.

Should the problem disappear, then try the Repair function of Avast found in the Control Panel under Add/Remove.

I doubt if Avast is the cause. This sounds more like an overheating problem or weak power supply. Check the fan screen to be sure it is not “dusted over”.

Keep me informed.

Thanks,
Techie

Bear I had the same problem whan avast was scaning my d:\ it made the computer restart, when I checked my d:\ I had a bad HD on my drive, So I went to buy a new HD, are you sure you don’t have a bad D drive do you.

Just run check disk for the D:, and if the error doesn’t show up just defrag you d drive, cause the computer will restart it self if the defrag is not complete and it mean you have a bad HD.

What is your operating system? And basic hardware configuration?

My operating system is Windows 98SE.I’m not sure exactly what you mean by basic hardware configuration.I’m computer illiterate. Please help, also I did a scan today of the C folder everything was fine, but when it finished it came up with an error box.It said:Ashsimpl caused an invalid page fault in module OLEAUT32.DLL at 0167:6539f9f0 what does this mean? What do I do to fix it? I also tried to send the error report, and it would not go it came up with the error code 0x0000274D.How can I correct this?Sorry for being a pain.I’m new to all of this. Thanks for your help!Bear41

Apart from the error message specifically referring to avast, I had a similar rebooting problem which now and then pointed out some ‘bad places’ on my hard disk. I have WinXP and it usually after these repeated reboots started to check my hard disk for errors.

Anyway had it checked by professional pc repairers and it turned out not to be the hard disk but simply a crashed power supply unit (as also given as possibility by Techie101).

If the avast crew don’t find it, I would check a pc shop, BUT specifically ask them to first check the supply unit, AND preferably take someone with you who is more experienced with PC’s. Guess a supply unit the cheapest spare part compared to Hard Disk, RAM memory and certainly compared to a processor…
