:DI always dreamt of a Mac. But it’s more expensive and it is more for the designers and creators. I think it’s more secure against viruses and worms though… ???
Graphic cards are wack. Really only for video editing…
Take a Dell (or any PC) and add a 20 inch display give it a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo chip and 1GB of RAM and a good graphics card and not some integrated chip and you can see how well these new machines compare price-wise to all other Computer manufactures
I configured a Dell with those specs for about $875 but the dell did not include FIrewire 400 or Firewire 800 or integrated 802.11n and bluetooth or a built in webcamera
Actually Apple is including more powerful cards in preparation for Leopard which has updated API to allow programmers to easily offload tasks to the GPU. (yea this is for Video editing but any App can take advantage of the GPU with the new API) Plus with the recent announcement of EA providing more games for the Mac it will help with the Game FPS

My main activities are web surfing, music, videos, and office applications etc. I know that I can use Safari for web, iTunes for music, and iWork for office. What can I use for video playback? Quicktime? Does it play most formats such as mpg, avi, rmvb?

Its very easy to adjust. Hardest thing is there is not a start menu.

Quicktime handles all Video on the Mac by default. But just like windows you can download VLC or Mplayer if quicktime does not support your format. However the Mac version of QuickTime supports more than the Windows version does.

Since there are no widespread Viruses for the mac yet most Mac users dont run Antivirus software. However Im sure you know ALWIL has a beta version out of avast for Mac if you really think you need it
And best of all, you can even run Windows XP on your Mac. That’s exactly what I’m going to do in case I need to some work in some application that still doesn’t exist for Mac. Possibilities are endless !

Almost forgot… There is Microsoft Office for Mac too.

Just remember BootCamp will not be free for Tiger users, So if you want to Dual boot wait for leopard.
On the other Hand if you want to run XP in virtualization then you still have to buy VMware or Parallels even if you have leopard
VMware is out of question that’s for sure. BootCamp, free or not I don’t care. I will have it. Leopard ? I will have it too… just take a look at the price of Vista Ultimate and again take a look back at Leopard price and you’ll see why I’m saying that… I spend that money on half week groceries, so it’s really nothing to be concerned about.

Why? Don’t you think it’s a very good application for testing into a virtual environment?
Although I never tried it I’ve heard that it’s pretty slow. I’ve seen how BootCamp works here on my buddy’s MacBookPro and all I can say I was amazed.
It really depends on your processor and RAM.
It could be comfortable in a powerful computer.
Both VMware and Parallels work great for things like Office, web and email. but there is a performance hit. Using BootCamp is Windows at native speed
