Archive corrupted?

Hi everyone. New user here…

I just did a complete thorough scan for the first time using Avast! and it found a few things I don’t understand. I have attached a screenshot of the scan results also.

  1. D:\PRELOAD\BASE_08.INP\read0600win_ENUhpcq0700.pdf
and under result it says “Unable to scan:CAB Archive is corrupted.” I have another one that says the same thing at the bottom of the list.

2)Alot of them say “Unable to scan: Archive is password protected”.

How do I fix these? Or should I worry about them?

Thank you,
Cherry

 Hi CherryBlossom :

I do not know about the 1st 2 items, but the following is in
our "FAQ"s ; would encourage you to read them :

"Q: When the file scanning is finished, avast! comes up with a number of files listed as “unable to scan”, even though I have used a thorough scan. Should I be concerned?

A: Some files are permanently locked by the system or they are in password-protected archives. These files cannot be scanned. It is normal and you don´t have to be worried about that. "

Hi,

I can give you answer to one of your questions.

Password protected Archives cannot be opened by Avast and therefore not be scanned. Just ignore them.

Your question number one I can’t answer, but a guru will soon come by.
(My best bet: Just ignore it)

Wecome to the forums, by the way

Edit: Spiritsongs, I am still typing too slowly.

Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons such as AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, there are others (and avast doesn’t know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).

When you run scans with the above programs and you delete harmful entries that they detect, a copy is kept (in quarantine/restore/backup) in case you need to reverse what you did. These are usually password protected, you should do some housekeeping and delete old backup/recovery/quarantine entries (older than two weeks or so), this will reduce the numbers of files that can’t be scanned.

By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. You may need to expand the column headings to see all the text.

Files that can’t be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.

I won’t worry that much. Some packed files can’t be opened by the scanner but this does not mean the problem is on the file, or that it is infected. When you use a full unpacker application (winzip, winrar, etc.) or the system opens this file, it will be scanned by avast resident.
Anyway, if it is not that big, you can send it by email to virus (at) avast.com and paste a link to this thread

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but how do I do “housekeeping” for these types of files?
Thanks,
Cherry

Of which program? Do you use SpyBot? Ad-aware? Other antispyware?

I do use ad aware.

Run it.
Choose the ‘Quarentine’ button on the top.
Select the backups clicking on them once.
Press ‘Delete’ buttom

Ahh. Thank you very much.

Some of your protected files are in AdAware’s skins folder, which it also protects, though for the life of me I can’t understand why (if you can download them freely). If there are some skins that you don’t use you could remove them.

I just use the default skin (looks fine) and no others so my list is much smaller.

Thank you. Yes, that is what I use also. I will delete those files too.
