ashShell.dll

:frowning:

Vista Home Premium.

4.7 failed to update to 4.8 I would fire up the program, it’d do the memory test and… nothing. My system tray icon went walkies, too.

So I downloaded the 4.8 installer. I uninstalled 4.7 but, the /program files directory remains with that one .dll in it, otherwise empty.

I CANNOT delete it. Explorer.exe retains a hook on it.

I can’t install 4.8 because it’s finding the hook and rejecting it. I have temporarily installed AVG 8 but even that complained that another av was running.

I need to delete the .dll

Oh, I forgot.

I have tried two applications to remove the hook, google “unlocker” and “move on boot”. I use Tweak UAC to suppress the elevation prompts and I right clicked the 4.8 installer and ran as administrator.

Restarting the computer should unload the module.
If you rename it beforehand, you can be sure that it won’t get loaded again.

Sorry, no.

The module is still hooked on reboot. It seems to be perpetually on. I can’t even get rid of it in safe mode.

Use avast! uninstaller from the safe mode.
If even this doesn’t help, then the problem is somewhere else…
