What is the CPU speed and type and how much RAM does the system have?
Strange… What does WebShield interfere with mail processing?
Which was your old antivirus (before avast)?

I don’t believe WebShield is interfering with mail processing. I guess my point was I had running at the time.
Originaly I had McAfee, then AVG Free 7.5 and finally for about little over 2 years Avast!
Can you activate logging in WebShield?
0. (Disable avast self-defense module: Program settings > Troubleshooting tab of settings.)
The log file are \data\log\ashwebsv.log and ashwebsv.ws.
They would be accessible when WebShield is terminated again.
Post them here or send by mail to rypacek (at) asw.cz
After that, disable the logging to avoid a big log file.
Oh, enable the self-defense module again after that if you have to follow step 0.
The log file are \data\log\ashwebsv.log and ashwebsv.ws.
No ashwebv.log found in that location and ashwebsv.ws is blank ( which I opened with notepad and by mistake set it openwith notepad permantely. What should I do next?
The web shield log file would only be present as Tech said if you first enable web shield logging, items 0 - 5 of his instruction. Did you first enable logging in the avast4.ini ?

Which is your operational system?
Microsoft Windows Home Edition Version 2002 SP3
You’ll need to restore back this file association…
Please tell me how to do that. I hope I hope didn’t f-up anything.
Yes I did.
OK you would probably need to reboot before the changes ini file took effect, then as you browse the log should start to get populated, then hopefuly it may show what activity may be causing this.
I don’t find the \data\log\ashwebsv.log
If you have rebooted and it doesn’t get generated I don’t know what to suggest.
OK I did a little test I added the EnableLogging=1 to my avast4.ini but I didn’t want to reboot, so I tried Terminating the Web Shield and then starting it and low and behold the AshWebSv.log file was created.
See image1, whilst it is currently 0KB I have to start browsing and see if it gets populated. After just opening a few pages it gets populated very quickly, see image2. So I don’t understang what is wrong with yours.
Could it be that mine is named AshWebSv, not AshWebSv.log?
Yes highly likely, but it doesn’t explain why there is no data in it.
That is because of one of my pet hates with Microsoft, the don’t display known file types, yes MS know what a .log file is. The user however, when trying to find it is stuffed because MS sodding hides the file type of ‘known’ types by default.
These changes to your file settings help a lot when trying to find files using explorer:
Thanks for your help. I tried that and still no AshWebSv.log. I’m going to stop now trying to fix this. Maybe when the new version will fix this. Unless you think uninstalling Avast completely and doing a clean install could resolve this?
I don’t know if there is anything to fix, if there was then it wouldn’t be just you, I wouldn’t be able to create it or populate the file with data. So as I said I really don’t know why this isn’t working on your system.
