Aswhook.dll

My Windows 11 has recently been updated to 24H2. Since then I keep getting the message
“Dism.exe - Bad Image
C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\aswhook.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
It then shows an Error status of 0x0000428. I have both reinstalled Avast and run a repair but the message still keeps appearing. Has anybody got any idea of how I can clear this?

I hardly turn on my win 11 pc but the one thing i have noticed is since that dreaded update the avast orange shortcut image on my desktop shows a white symbol instead of the orange one. It still opens the UI but i wonder if this could be to do with your error.
no idea how to clear it though as ive not seen that bad image error.

Hello user1408, welcome to the Avast Forums.

Did you run the Avast uninstaller before re-installing Avast? https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/uninstall-antivirus-utility/#pc Which version and flavor of Avast Antivirus are you using? Please post a screenshot of the digital signature for aswhook.dll.

PS: I had no issue upgrading to Win 11 24H2 with Avast Premium installed.

Thanks for your interest in this, Lano. I did use the uninstaller but as this was invoked by a generic uninstall program, I have run the Avast uninstaller again, this time directly, and reinstalled Avast. This has made no difference.
The version of Avast I am using is Avast Free Antivirus 25.1.9816a (build 25.1.9816.906). I attach a screen shot of aswhook.dll.

Thanks for the screenshot and info. The digital signature of aswhook.dll matches mine, so that’s not the problem. You could try running DISM, and then SFC, and let them fix any OS corruption they find. Be sure to reboot in between and afterwards. The only other thing I can think of is reverting to 23H2 and trying again to install 24H2. Hopefully, you have a recent pre-24H2 disk image to make the task more precise. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks again. I had tried sfc and dism before but I ran them again and it made no difference. I have now done a restore back to 23H2 and Windows update says that it’s not ready to update me to 24H2 yet. I’ll just sit back now and wait for the update to occur in the course of time and see whether the problem reappears then.
Thanks again for your help.

You’re welcome, thanks for update. Might be a failed Windows update: Verify that Windows/Downloaded Program Files is empty, it could cause problems. Good luck!
