Did this occur on the first boot after the upgrade ?
Download the attached Fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that
Did the fix. PC will still not boot.
This was a first boot after upgrade. The pc rebooted a few times during the vista upgrade.
Thanks for your help.
I ran Frst again, here is the attached log. Thanks.
Ok this one will remove Avast as the XP version is slightly different to Vista onwards versions

Ran fixlist removing avast. PC will still not boot in any safe mode. Rescue usb with vista on it will not recognize hard drive that has vista loaded.
(I am using a pata to sata converter tray for 2nd hdd). BIOS recognizes both hdds.
Attached is the fixlog. Thanks a ton for your patience.
Ah ha … Could you disconnect the second drive and see if it boots then
Let me clarify my setup:
Ide (pata) hdd is used only for storage of large files. No OS is installed.
Cd drive removed and pata to sata tray with sata hdd installed. Had win xp on it for years and ran well. Recently upgraded that install to Vista due to winxp end of support.
Should I remove the ide (pata) hdd and see if it will boot ?
Yes as there have been several instance where a second hard drive has prevented the main drive from booting
You are a genius ! I took out the ide drive booted with usb drive and could see the hard drive. Performed a startup repair and pc booted into vista.
Thanks!
