aswRvrt.sys hangs on safemode, no log in, stuck at black screen w/cursor

This issue is way above my pay grade. I’ve been trying to fix it for 2 days and cannot get into the system. All safe modes/restores from the F8 option take me to the same spot…black screen with cursor.

I have a Toshiba Satellite running Windows 7 64b.

I should add that my only other machine is a gateway netbook with no CD/DVD drive. I do have a 8G memory stick that I loaded Hirens on, but quickly realized I was out of my league.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Joe

What happened prior to this occurring ?

Within the safe mode menu is there an option called repair my computer ?

Nothing that we can pinpoint. My wife had a few IE windows open that began to hang so she restarted and the problem began.

There is a “Repair Your Computer” option…it brings me to the exact same point as any other option.

OK I will PM the link to enable you to download the windows 7 recovery console

Download the following three programmes to your desktop :

  1. Rufus

For 64bit systems
2.Windows 7 64bit RC
3. Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64

Insert the USB stick Then run Rufus

Press Start Burn

Then copy FRST to the same USB

Insert the USB into the sick computer and start the computer. First ensuring that the system is set to boot from USB
Note: If you are not sure how to do that follow the instructions Here

When you reboot you will see this although yours will say windows 7.

It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

It went back to the black screen with the cursor once I tried to load with the USB.

OK that does not sound good… From the safe mode menu are you able to access the command prompt option

No love. Not with the USB nor without.

There is another programme we could try … This is a windows PE system and if the hardware on you computer is OK this will allow us to at the very least recover any data

Download Peazip to the desktop
Run and install the programme
As it installs this page will show, deselect the AVG ticks
Press decline and it will then install cleanly

Download the following files to the desktop … Right click the links and select save as…then select desktop

Rufus

OTLPE_standard

Right click OTLPE on your desktop and select …Open as archive

Once the USB has burnt then

[*]Reboot your system using the boot USB you just created.
Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from USB follow the steps here
[*]As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads

[*]Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop.
Note : as you are running from USB it is not exactly speedy
[*]Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
[*]Select the Windows folder of the infected drive if it asks for a location
[*]When asked “Do you wish to load the remote registry”, select Yes
[*]When asked “Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning”, select Yes
[*]Ensure the box “Automatically Load All Remaining Users” is checked and press OK
[*]OTL should now start.
[*]Press Run Scan to start the scan.
[*]When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
[*]Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system.
[*]Right click the file and select send to : select the USB drive.
[*]Confirm that it has copied to the USB drive by selecting it
[*]You can backup any files that you wish from this OS
[*]Please post the contents of the C:\OTL.txt file in your reply.

Now I get to the blue screen of death.

Looks very much like a hardware problem as Reatogo should run quite happily from the CD. Unfortunately there is little that I can do now … Sorry
