what antivirus did you have before installing avast ?
have you removed it ?
have you run the uninstall tool for that program and reboot ? http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/
Having trouble uninstalling programs from your computer?
Sometimes uninstalling programs can be rather troublesome. Some may even defy the normal uninstall process altogether, while others do seem to work properly but may leave a host of data behind.
The companies themselves surely know about these issues and – instead of creating better programs – they often have made an uninstall tool or cleanup tool to help you do a proper job. The problem is that these specific tools are usually not readily found on the websites of these vendors.
You need to un-install avast v4.8 using Add/Remove Programs while the system is disconnected from the Internet.
Install avast! that you downloaded and a reboot will be required.
Make sure you are connected to the Internet then update the definitions file to the latest avaible and get the avast! Internet Security Quick Start documentation for additional help: http://www.avast.com/en-ca/download-documentation
What annoys me is that I paid good money to get Avast upgrade and I have to go to you guys to get it installed. As a novice I could make a complete b…. of it .
Yet I rely on you !!!

Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
Any other installed antivirus or security program?
The secure program that comes with Vista. That’s why I mentioned “firewall” as I am not sure how they encroach on other programs.
Also, the rag tag of attempted Avast installs.
However, I am not sure why the laptop has virtually shut off broadband.
While I am fumbling about trying to fix things on line. Is the laptop vulnerable to attack ?
After some time going through what seems to be a normal install, following your instructions the laptop goes quiet. The uninstall went OK.
The reinstall and the licence key was inserted
The install progress green bar went through process. Then I waited.
After some time the HD went static.
I wait then a panel comes on screen :-
“Windows Installer panel shows :-
“Install server not responding”
There is one Avast orange icon bottom of screen and the “avast Internet Setup” panel is still on screen, with green bar full. With VPS above it.
One 2hours later :-
Widows Installer has just appeared, showing “Preparing to install”
All’s quiet on the HD !! no activity now for 2hours. And on line without security !!!
Followed recommends to the letter.
Started the install ,put licence key in.
Got green progress bar.
Waited … waited , got “preparing to install”
Waited ……
Had to go out for a couple of hours.
Now find Windows Installer showing :-
“install server not responding”
Grrrrrrrrr ……………… ???
PS The install files cannot be seen in safe mode; is this correct ?
So as things seemed clear of previous installs I had this last try.
A very old borrowed PC uses Panda and flies along.
Just popped up on screen “avast Internet Security Setup … Trial period could not be activated. Please make sure the computer is connected to the Internet” ???
What the H…L ???
