I recently installed Avast 5.0.545, without the IM and P2P shields. I’ve turned off automatic update, so that I can do it manually. My virus definitions are up to date. I’m getting the above message on the Avast taskbar icon. Is this because I don’t have all the shields installed? Because I’ve got automatic updates turned off? Or why? What can I do to get rid of the message?
I tried that (Settings > Status bar), but the shields I don’t use (IM and P2P) aren’t even listed there.
BUT … I noticed “Definitions auto updates” listed there, unchecked that, and it cleared the icon message. I guess that makes #2 a “Yes.”
I have the same setup, go to settings/ status bar/ untick “Definition auto updates”. Its alerting you that auto updates are turned off but you know that since you done it
I really want to disable this warning and no, I don’t want automatic updates on.
And frankly, I don’t think a program should be so patronising either.
Don’t insult my intelligence - I turned automatic updates off for a reason - i.e. I sometimes connect over 3G and get charged for data usage, I don’t want my virus definitions to update unless I’m using WiFi somewhere.
In fact this is dangerous, because now when I see that yellow alert triangle, even if it’s for anther reason, I’ll assume it’s just that annoying little patronising message telling me I’ve picked the “wrong” option, cf. “The Boy who Cried Wolf”.
Anyway, thank you for posting the instructions to disable it.
Open the Settings, go to the Status Bar tab that lets you pick what is monitored by the wee system tray icon, and uncheck Definitions auto updates. Job done.
Not wishing to insult your intelligence, but have you checked to see why the alert is there ?
If you left click on the avast icon then it will open the avastUI, Summary, Current statistics view and it will show which the Attention yellow triangle relates to. Without that information I can’t say why it is there.
If it is for the fact that you have set Updates to Manual, then I also guess that you haven’t found the settings to ignore the alert for that. From the avastUI, Settings, Status Bar, uncheck the Definitions auto update monitoring.
Avast is one of the most configurable AVs, you just have to find what to adjust.
