Automatic avast update and jetico pf

Hi to all,
i have a problem with the automatic update of avast and I think it is caused by jetico pf, but I don’t understand the why.

I created the rules for avast.setup, aswUpdSv and all avast components which asked me the connection to the internet, but the automatic update doesn’t work: a red pop up tells me, every time

An error has occured while attempting to update. Please check the logs.
. but if I disable Jetico or if I run the update manually, it works well, can someone help me?

thanks in advanced

That seems strange that if you disable Jetico it works or with Jetico enabled and do a manual update that works but not automatic updates. I would expect it not to work for either auto and manual updates as the process is the same, just the initiation is different.

What is in the logs, avast! Log Viewer, anything more detailed ?

you should only need access for avast.setup, ashMaiSv.exe (avast! mail scanner) and ashWebSv.exe (avast! web shield).

You could try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this. Not sure if this would make a difference since the manual update works.

You could also try deleting the entry for avast.setup in Jetico pf and try updating again, this would force Jetico to ask again and possibly correct a permissions data error.

That seems strange
I know that :(

well these are two line of my log, about a failed automatic update
07/04/2006 16.35.31 admin 1372 Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0x20000004, dwRes is 20000004.
07/04/2006 16.35.32 admin 1372 An error has occured while attempting to update. Please check the logs.

I have already tried to delete all avast entry.

I will try to repair avast.

I will tell you something soon.
thanks

Well a forum search for 0x20000004 returns many hits (some of which are quite old), a number relating to the auto update.

Some suggest looking at the setup/log file, which is more detailed, C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log (in a text editor, etc.) this might be too big for notepad so wordpad or another editor and paste the last entries (newest entries are at the bottom of the file). Try and find the section/bit relevant to the failed Auto Update and post them here.

this is a small part of the log file

20:27:51 nrm/int SYNCER: Type: use IE settings 20:27:51 nrm/int SYNCER: Auth: another authentication, use WinInet 20:27:51 dbg/gen Entered SetupProcessPro::Do( INST_OP_UPDATE_GET_PACKAGES ) 20:27:51 dbg/gen Entered SetupProcessWin32Avast::Do( INST_OP_UPDATE_GET_PACKAGES ) 20:27:51 dbg/gen Entered SetupProcessWin32::Do( INST_OP_UPDATE_GET_PACKAGES ) 20:27:51 dbg/gen Entered SetupProcess::Do( INST_OP_UPDATE_GET_PACKAGES ) 20:27:51 min/pkg ERROR:HttpGetWininet, catch returned 0x00002EE7 20:27:51 min/pkg ERROR:HttpGetWininet, catch returned 0x00002EE7 20:27:51 nrm/gen InvalidateCurrent: invalidated server 'Download29 AVAST server' from 'main' 20:27:51 nrm/gen SelectCurrent: selected server 'Download8 AVAST server' from 'main' 20:27:51 min/pkg GetPackages - set proxy for inet

I have copied and pasted the lines from the start of the automatic update.

some of those lines are rewritten after, but only because avast! tries the connection with others server

A successfull log, for comparison:

I’m at a loss, as the elements of the log you pasted, seems incomplete when checked against Tech’s and one in my setup.log.

The only thing I see is the line:
20:27:51 nrm/gen InvalidateCurrent: invalidated server ‘Download29 AVAST server’ from ‘main’
This I would have thought might possibly be a problem with the servers.def file, but that seems unlikely if the same servers.def file is used for a manual update, which works.

If you have tried the repair, I suggest you wait for the next time avast checks for an update and see what happens. If there is another failed update all I can suggest is that you uninstall avast, reboot, reinstall and boot again.

Hi icefox,

There are so many update servers that writing a rule in Jetico to cover them all might not work.

Have you tried the option to handle avast! updates as a browser? This worked for me when I was testing Jetico.

i have handled avast! as application trusted zone. i think it is better than browser.

tomorrow I will try do uninstall avast! and delete all avast! entry in jetico, reinstall it and test the automatic update.

I will say you something after an automatic update.

thanks for your support

also after uninstalling avast!,rebooting, installing, booting again, automatic update doesn’t work

Can you post four screenshots (windows)?

  1. Update (Basic).
  2. Update (Basic) > Details.
  3. Update (Connections)
  4. Update (Connections) > Proxy.

sure,

On the fourth, change proxy settings to ‘Direct Connection’ instead of automatic detection.
Test 8)
I suppose you’re not using a local proxy.

I have already tested the connection whit the button in the low of the window, and both the configuration are ok: avast! says Proxy Server settings are correct.

However, I have modified that setting. I hope this solution works

See http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=20487.msg171612#msg171612

automatic update still doesn’t work

But the manual do?
How are you sure the automatic is not working?

manual update has worked since I have installed avast!.

i’m sure the automatic update is not working because a red pop up appears on my desktop, and because in the log file there are others, new, lines like those I have already posted

I suppose you’re not permanent connected to the Internet and you use dial-up.
So, when does this error occur? At any time? After the logon, when you start Windows?
If you’re connected, does the same error occur?

that error occurs every time the automatic update starts, also if I am connected to the internet
