I would like to set automatic update of virus, but no update when win xp restarts, how do I set configuration? I use avast antivirus.
Right click the ‘a’ blue icon.
Choose Program Settings.
Go to Update (Basic) tab of settings and check for automatic updates (click Details and configure other update settings).
Go to Connections tab of settings and mark the way you connect Internet.

I’m not sure if avast can differentiate what is a restart/reboot of XP from a normal boot (with the exception of scheduling a boot-time scan), so I don’t think this is possible.
avast checks for updates when you connect to the internet and every four hours if you remain connected. If you have broadband/cable, that happens right after boot so the only think you could do is to delay the check on connection (AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=60 or however many seconds you want it to wait).
If you can tell the reason you wish to do this perhaps we can suggest a work around ?
I would like to configure when the automatic update is done, not when win xp starts, or when internet explorer is opened.
avast checks if there is an available connection each 40 seconds.
If there isn’t, wait more 40 seconds to check. Checking does not take more than one second and, of course, does not use the Internet band.
If there is a connection, check for an update. If there is not any new file to download, wait 4 hours to start checking again. If there is an available update, start it and install it. Again, wait 4 hours to check the next time. Some of this settings could be configurated different, I posted the default values of the avast4.ini file.
You CAN’T change this behavior (only configure the schedule of it). I mean, avast will try to update after logon as it’s prepared to do so… any other user will love this option as they want the antivirus updated as soon as possible.
avast is NOT updated just because IE is opened.
So no updating when win starts, is not possible, except without any internet-connection?
No avast doesn’t establish a connection, it checks if you have one established and if so checks for updates. As I have said, if you are a broadband/cable user and the always-on connection establishes itself automatically then avast can check for updates, otherwise it has to wait for a connection to be established.
What type of connection do you have ?
I have broadband. no updating when win starts, is not possible?
Shortly, not.
Why don’t you just delay it for a longer period… 5 minutes for instance?
