avast 2016 to 2017

i have an old lisance that i bought but didnt use yet. it is called avast internet security 2016 if i open my box and enter serial can i use avast 2017 ?

There is no avast 2017 and there will not be.
The version numbering has changed after 2016.11.1.2262 (released in april this year).

avast doesn’t work with serial numbers.
They work with activation codes and license files.

Any license can be used as long as it is still valid.
