I ran Avast last night. When I went to my computer this morning, it said that Avast requires me to restart my O/S, and gives a Yes/No option. I said No because I wanted to check it out first.
Two weeks ago, I got a similar message after running Ad-Aware. I rebooted, and the computer completely crashed. The technician who fixed it said that Ad-Aware running on the computer after XPSP2 had downloaded had broken the kernel of my O/S. It took him 9 hours to recover (some) of my files and repair the damage.
I don’t want to make a similar mistake again!!!
Why would Avast tell me this, and should I reboot?
Thanks for any advice anyone can give me.
I am running Avast 4.1, the version of VPS file is “viruses data base”. I am running XP Home Version.
Thanks, Vic
I checked and the auto update was enabled.
But when I check the version in “About Avast”, it still shows as 4.0.
Is this because I haven’t yet rebooted?
'k, you have relieved my mind a bit
You’re right, I will eventually have to reboot.
Besides, it’s not letting me do anything else until I say “yes” anyway!
It’s just that the technician who got my $400 said that I should have called him first when Ad-Aware asked the same question…
Anyway, thank you very much for your prompt and comforting reply and explanation
He worked 9 hours on repairing “something” in your computer ? That’s a lie, and I’m 100% sure I’m right. He literally stole that money out of your pocket bro…
$ 400 ???
That’s outrageous !!! Even if he charges $20 per hour, try to do the math yourself. It would be $180 only (reasonable price), even if he charges $30 bucks per hour (which I highly doubt), it would be $270… not even close to $400 that he took from you my friend…
As far as avast! request for rebooting goes, just reboot your PC without any fear… we do that all the time when it’s needed, and believe me, no one repairs our “kernel”…
Next time, DO NOT call your “technician”. When you have a problem, ask in here or on many other useful forums on the net. We have a lot of different guys and girls, with all kind of professions in here. Someone will always be able to give you an answer. For example, my profession is Computer Technician, and I work as computer technician presently… Eddy is here, Technical, Bob, Techie101, wonderful guys from Alwil team and many many others which I forgot to list in here.
Yes cmilton5, we are not trying to laugh at you… we are just saying, that there are so many crooks out there and you should be more careful about that. Guys who took $400 from you doesn’t know anything else but how to take your money from you. I highly doubt that he paid full attention on fixing your system. His priority was to take that money, nothing else, and that’s very very sad. I hate those guys who uses people’s ignorance to earn money easy way… :
Gee Whiz! I might get back into the computer repair biz again!
All joking aside, I believe the fee your “technician” charged was a bit much. Unless parts were replaced, the charge appears excessive.
I have Adaware and it downloads updates frequently without incident. If your “kernel” …broke…as the technician said, then I would say that something else caused it. Normally the Kernel32 process does not just “crash”. It fails to load or your receive “General page faults errors” which usually can be simply cured by starting in safe mode. You can then remove the program apparently causing the problem and start over. This then puts things back the way they were and the installation or update can take place normally.
Don’t mean to rub salt in wound, but I would not use the technician again until he explains fully what he charges and for what services.
As for “rebuilding” your system. It is simply a matter of reinstalling the OS in most cases…partial or full.
Sometimes, using a “restore” point does the trick.
There are many talented people here on the forum to help you. It may turn out that you MAY need a technician, but at least you will know what you are up against and possible causes/cures.
I wouldnt highly doubt 30 or more dollars an hour Sasha, as I see those types of prices all over the US. $50.00 to $60.00 (and even higher) an hour is quite often the norm. Pretty rediculous eh? That is why I help my friends out here locally who have problems that I know Im familiar with and I do it either for free, or for a rediculously low fee - (they buy me lunch) lol
Anyway, he didn’t mention his location… .he just said dollars. We in Canada, have dollars as well… I wouldn’t go over $30/per hour, unless you are crook or some extra good technician. Some Extra good technician, wouldn’t need 9 hours to fix something like that. As Techie101 said, even if you have to reinstall/repair Windows (which I believe he did), it would take him just couple of hours, certainly not 9.
