I uninstalled Norton SystemWorks 2004 Pro and tried eTrust AntiVirus as my first alternative. I wasn’t happy with eTrust and uninstalled it and then installed Avast 4.5 Home.
Reading these pages tells me there may be some leftover Norton entries somewhere. I have manually deleted all Symantec-Norton files and folders I can find in Windows Explorer. Entries were removed manually from AutoExec.bat, and a few other boot files on C, but there may be some entries left in the registry. To my knowledge, there is no tool to remove NAV2004. The rnav tool only removes NAV2003. Is there any tool you might suggest I run to remove any latent Norton AntiVirus entries from my registry, or should I just not worry about it unless I have a problem? My system is now very stable. It has never been faster since Norton was removed.
This is my first post in these avast forums. I hope to learn many things here.
The tool can be downloaded here: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/consumer/Rnav2003.exe This is however for nav2003, but I would take a wild guess that you could try Rnav2004.exe and see if that works. Other than that I would searct norton’s (symantec) site for NAV Removal Tool.
As stated in my initial post, Rnav2003.exe does not work on NAV2004/2005, SystemWorks 2004/2005, or NIS 2004/2005. It can only be used on 2003 and earlier.
Symantec has not made an rnav tool for 2004/2005. A search of this forum for rnav only tells me about the rnav2003 tool, which I cannot use.
There is a registry file (nsw200498_reg_removal.reg) to remove NAV that is part of NSW2004, but it is to be used when Add/Remove Programs fails. That is not the case with me. Add/Remove Programs was successful.

This tool is only for Windows 98/Me. There is a separate reg file tool for 2000/XP. To use this reg tool would mean I’d need to reinstall Script 5.6. It might screw up some of my other Windows Updates, and I just got them all reinstalled! Though, NSW has been uninstalled, I still run Norton Utilities directly from the CD.
If someone knows of a third-party tool that might remove NAV 2004 or NSW 2004, please let me know. I won’t know which registry entries to leave and to keep.
Just checked symantec site and the 2003 tool suposedly works for 2004 removal as well. A search for norton 2004 removal uninstall gives instructions to use Rnav2003.exe.
Sorry only working with the information given by symantec.
That is contrary to what I have found on the Symantec site. Please tell me the URL of the Symantec page where you read that rnav2003 works on NAV/NSW2004. Thanks.
Sorry can’t find it right now, but you have obviously done a considerable amount searching and I don’t doubt what you say. It was some time ago when I last looked.
From what you posted it looks like a manual cleanup of registry or possibly a registry cleaner utility.
Since you state that you have uninstalled Systemworks successfully and are experiencing no instabilities, I would recommend that you leave your computer as is. Like the Americans say: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.
