Somehow, avast is making my computer shut down and restart by itself when I get on the internet using Mozilla Firefox. I tried Explorer and the same thing happened. It only allows the SBC Yahoo browser. Even then, if I try to update Windows, it crashes. If I dissable Avast, everything is fine. At first I though it was the firewall, but that is not the problem. I’ve been using avast for about a year and this has never happened before. After dissabling Avast, I checked the Windows update and my computer is up to date. I have Windows XP, SP2, Zone Alarm, Avast 4.6 Home, Firefox 1.0.7, Yahoo DSL connection. Help please! I’d like to keep using Avast.

Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner) (allow server rights; access to ports 80, 443; accept connections from localhost on ports 12080)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service) (allow email rights: outgoing on ports 110, 25 and 119; accept connections from localhost on ports 12110, 12025, 12119)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable)
Can you check?
Are you using the free or paid version of Zone Alarm?
What exactly does it mean, “it crashes”?
Any datailed error messages? Does it crash randomly, or always at the same moment?
Just checked the firewall settings and it has everything except for ashUpdSv.exe. Looked in C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ but didn’t find it there either. Something else that is allowed by the firewall is the ashDisp.exe. Avast chacks for updates everytime I get on the internet automatically though.
When I said it crashes I meant it restarts itself without giving any error messages. It seems like it happens randomly but I’m not positive. If I try to open Firefox, it starts to open and immediately the computer starts to restart itself. Sometimes it wiil opena and as soon as you try to go somewhere on the web the same restarting situation happens. The screen goes black and the computer restarts itself.
Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Initialization > uncheck the option for automatic restart.
When the error appear again, copy the message at the blue screen.
mine also crashed with the latest zone alarm free at random intervals, fine with sygate free.
I thought that all the problems started after updating the ZA firewall… Changed to Sygate, no more problems. I also unchecked the auto restart. Thanks for all your help!

Edit: when you run avast! with ZoneAlarm, you must have been asked to switch transparent features of WebShield off. Have you done it (answered YES) or not? Thanks.
