??? hi i use avast 4.6 good programme but when i have scan archive files checked it takes hours to scan like i started scanning at 9.00 this morning now 9.00 its still scanning why is this. yet if i dont have that checked it takes say 2 hours do do scan of c drive is this a problem or is this normal. and when i checked the log i stopped the scan my self list of things said unable to scan hope some 1 can answer me ? here as im really curious.
HI,
12 hours seems an awful long time for a scan. But, scan times depend on the size of your hard drive and number of files on it. A scan for me - with archives - takes two hours.
The message ‘unable to scan’ is perfectly normal and are probably password protected files (e.g. signatures for a malware scanner like Avast, which are password protected so they cannot be accessed or scanned by another scanner which could cause false-positives etc.).

thx mike i only have a 40 gigs hard drive like but i have loads mp3 files unless thats what its scannin sorry 4 posting again i done that in case no 1 replyed to me question i posted previous.
Hi,
MP3 files could cause Avast to take longer to scan so this may be the cause of the problem.
Also, what DavidR has said in another reply in the previous post is also true - you really shouldn’t worry about archive scanning.
Glad to be of help
Mike
A through scan with archives enabled will take a very long time (avast has one of the best archive support abilities so it will scan many archives others don’t).
I rarely do anything other than a weekly Standard scan without archives on my system that takes just under 8 minutes. The higher the sensitivity and the inclusion of archives the longer a scan will take.
avast provides a multi level resident protection (web shield, email, p2p, standard shield, etc.) so you are relatively well protected, archives by their nature are inert until you open them, extract the files and run the executable, long before that happens avast will have scanned the content and alerted you to any infection.
I did a through scan with archives shortly after I got avast to ensure my system was clean and I would only do this if I suspected something wasn’t right. After that keeping your system clean and only look deeper if required or suspicious. Other than that I do a weekly Standard scan of local disks without archives, but the choice is yours.
Welcome to the forums.
