Avast 4.7.0.0 Installation woes on Win98 system

I have been trying for hours to install Avast! Home on this PC, but keep getting the following error.

Visual C++ runtime error

Program C:dirname\setupfr.exe (or setupeng.exe )

Runtime Error

R6027
-not enough space for lowio initialization

The system is a PIII 800MHz with 256MB SDRam running W98 SE (French) with all the updates. There is lots of HD space (2 GB used on a 20GB HD) and there are no other programs running. I have systray, scanreg and loadpowerprofile loading on startup.

I have uninstalled NAV 2005 and removed any traces of Symantec from the PC.

So there shouldn’t be any problem with lack of memory.

I also downloaded the English and French versions from Alwil site as well as a shareware site, just to make sure it didn’t get corrupted during download or anything.

Any help much appreciated.

Norton must be guilty here…

  1. Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel (other Symantec products also). Boot.
  2. Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista.
  3. Boot.
  4. Install avast! Boot.
  5. See what you get.

Full SymNRT info:

  1. Download and save these three files to the Windows desktop:
    a) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/MSIFIX.bat
    b) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SymNRT.exe
    c) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SYMMSICLEANUP.reg

  2. Run the three files that you just downloaded
    a) On the Windows desktop, double-click the MSIFIX icon.
    Click Run.
A black window may appear very briefly.
    b) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SymNRT icon.
    Click Run.
    Click Next.
Click I accept the License Agreement, and click Next.
Type the letters and numbers that you see in the white box, and then click Next.
Click Yes or OK at each prompt.
You may need to click more than once. Your computer may be restarted for you more than once.
You may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.
    c) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SYMMSICLEANUP icon.
Click Run, and then click Yes.
    Click OK.

  3. Boot.

Thank you Tech for your suggestions. I have proceeded with all the above (though I selected the Win98/ME version of the Norton removal tool) but unfortunately I keep getting the same Visual C++ runtime error.

I have also run RegCleaner, CCleaner and Toniarts EasyCleaner… she`s as clean as a whistle.
I also did a housecall online scan, which showed up clean.

Any other ideas?

Will them help?

Maybe installing latest vb runtime files might help?.I know with w98se some files can be replaced with older versions.Maybe try installing latest runtime files then reboot and try installing again.

Sorry we won’t be able to finish this, because my friend had to take her computer back for her studies… At least it works now, so she can do her homework. NAV 2005 had rendered it useless.

BTW I had all the latest VB runtime files…
I also installed Open Office (needs lots of memory to install) to see if it would get an out of memory message during installation, but it installed just fine so I’m thinking it’s something within the Avast installation file that doesn’t get on with this specific hardware/OS configuration.

I don’t have the machine to play with anymore so I guess this pretty well ends this thread.

Until next time, thanks again for trying.

I don’t think so. Most probably, some incompatible software and not hardware/OS.
