I have just run the automatic update to avast 4.7.817.
Old version had no problems. Now a mail client problem.
I use my ISP firewall Freedom Product Version: 5.1.16.43705.
I use Thunderbird mail client 1.5.0.2
When I tried to get new mail from my server I get the following message:
An error occurred with the POP3 mail server. Mail.server.x responded:
I pause internet mail no problem.
Is there an new firewall rule needed??
Thanks.
Well, the new ashmaisv.exe should ask for Internet connection… :
Maybe you can delete the old, start to download email and allow the new one when asked…
I deleted the avast email internet scanner out of the firewall rules.
It prompted fto allow, set rules for bit inbound and outbound.
restarted thunderbird.
Same problem.
I notice you have downloaded the new release of Thunderbird too. Have you tried the same firewall remove/refresh for Thunderbird too?
Just gave that a try.
Same problem.
If I turn off SMTP scanning (customize) that works, but obviously no scanning.
Is there any error message in the log file Avast4\DATA\log\aswMaiSv.log ?
Error happens when Maxconnections message happens.

It usually indicates that another program redirects connections like avast which results in connection looping. You can see the particular process name if you add ‘Log=20’ to avast4.ini under [MailScanner].
Seems to be Freedom.exe!

Are you running two resident AVs ?
Your log indicates Ignored Processes: avgemc.exe, which looks like avg is also involved in the email scanning and this could well be the source of the problem, two scanners conflicting.
avgemc - avgemc.exe - Process InformationProcess File: avgemc or avgemc.exe
Process Name: AVG Anti-Virus CleanerDescription:
avgemc.exe is a part the AVG Anti-Virus suite. The process scans e-mails for viruses. This process should not be removed to ensure that your system security is not breached.
Having two resident AVs is not recommend they can conflict and rather than being better protected you can be left more vulnerable as they can conflict.
David,
we’ve been here before (July 2005). That list of exclusions is created by avast automatically. It has nothing to do with the user.
But I think your basic concern may well be right.
freedom.exe Zero Knowledge Freedom is the Anti-Virus, Personal Firewall and Parental Control. It also blocks ads, safeguards your personal information, encrypts your passwords, and much more.
Thanks Alan I wasn’t aware that this list of IgnoredProcesses was generated by avast.
As you say it might well be freedom and ashMaiSv.exe conflicting.
Hi,
It seems to be that the new release is incompatible with the freedom suite.
The freedom suite crashes regularly now. The funny thing is that everything seems to work for awhile then …
I have turn off the freedom suite, turn on the MS firewall and avast.
No problems.
I am looking to see if I can get an update for freedom but have had no luck from my ISP in the past.
Thanks for your help.
Not the new release, having two resident installed AVs is only ever going to cause you grief. What does freedom offer that avast doesn’t (probably less AV protection), keep the firewall and parental content side if you must but bin the AV element.
I’m assuming you can do a custom install of freedom where you can select what elements to install ?
If so then uninstall freedom, reboot and do a custom install minus the anti-virus element.
There are other firewall and parental control programs out there and freeware to boot.
