Avast 4.7.942 won't run, uses all cpu

Help! I took advantage of the upgrade to Avast! 4.7.942 and now I can’t run a virus scan when I try to run Avast. Task Manager is telling me that ashAvast.exe is using 100% of the cpu. Everything else on the PC grinds to a halt and I have to end the ashAvast.exe process to free up the PC again.

I am using Windows XP Home, Windows Firewall, no other antivirus programs. All was well until I installed the upgrade. :-\

What happens if, in windows explorer, you go to c:\program files\alwil software\avast4 And run ashSimpl.exe or ashSimp2.exe? Can you run a scan now?

If you can run ashSimp2.exe without any problems, but cannot run ashSimpl.exe (i.e. it would use 100% CPU again, without anything appearing), please check this post - the linked files may solve your problems (if you needed additional instructions on the replacing, let us know, please).

Oldman & Igor,

Igor’s link did the trick. Virus scan running as I type this. Thanks for the assist!

Best regards!

Glad it worked for you. And welcome to the forum.
