You should have posted here, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0, the avast 4.x Home/Pro forum.

What is your operating system ?

Your version of avast 4.7.1098, is positively ancient the latest version is 4.8.1368.

You should do a clean reinstall of avast:
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall. Ensure that you scroll down and select the avast direct download link for the English version and not Cnet as that is for an on-line installation (not what you want to do). - Direct download for avast Home, English version, http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

    1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. [b]Once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

There is no way to have the boot-time scan run on every boot and if you ask me crazy to even consider it, your boot time would be massive.

Given the outdated version of avast I would suspect you have other outdated applications. I would also suggest a visit to this site, which scans your system for out of date programs that have patches to close vulnerabilities, http://secunia.com/software_inspector/.

thanks David, did a format on the drives, installed newest Avast 4.8 on home edition win xp service pack 2, ie 6, (may move to service pack 3 ie 6 once all programs are installed,
will definitely try that program you rec for scanning outdated programs/ tools, I wonder why avast 4.7 never let me know there was a new version of avast available .
thank you again, Clato

You’re welcome.

A lot depends on your avast settings if you set the program updates to manual, some people do then you may not have been aware. So long as the VPS updates happen Windows XP security center won’t flag it as out of date.

SP3 not only closes a number of vulnerabilities it also allows for the upgrading of IE6 which is also vulnerable, so this should be a matter of urgency.
