In February 2009, I renewed my previous subscription to Avast Pro and downloaded a new version, 4.8, and activated it with the provided license key. I am using Windows XP Pro. In Windows’ list of programs under the “Start” menu, Avast! Antivirus appears, but, when I select it, the only choice that appears is an item entitled “Avast! Antivirus” and when invoked, it only does a scan of memory. There is no choice of selecting either the “Simple” interface or the “Enhanced” interface as described in the Help file. Upon going to the list of installed programs on my system, using Windows Explorer, I found the Avast program files, including “ashSimpl”, “ashSimp2” and ashEnhcd." Clicking on any of these does nothing!
Why, when installing Avast, are there not options in the Windows program list for any invoking of these latter interfaces? Why, when installing Avast, is there not an option to add an icon to the Windows desktop for Avast?
Also, I finally was able to bring up an Avast “Simple” pop-up navigation tool, but, I do not see any “Menu” button as described in the Help file.
It’s not an avast problem, it’s likely due to a previously installed A/V program still on your computer.
Please let us know what (if any) Anti-virus programs you had on this computer before installing avast.
As I described in my original post, I had no other antivirus programs installed, I only had a previous version of Avast installed on my system, prior to updating my license with version 4.8.
Sorry, I must have missed that.
Have you tried a repair? Maybe a uninstall with the avast removal tool http://avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html, then download the latest version http://avast.com/eng/download-avast-professional.html and install again with your License key?
It seems to me you have an incomplete installation of avast.
Follow scythe944’s advice by first trying a repair of avast through Add/remove Programs.
Control panel > Add/remove programs > click once on avast to select it > click on Change/Remove > scroll down the left pane and click on repair > click OK > follow directions
If that does not work, follow scythe944’s other suggest to uninstall and then reinstall.
