Avast 4.8 Problems - Updated from 4.7 freezes the system

Hi All,
I am new at this forum and I hope I’d get a proper answer to my problem(s).
I am using Avast Home Edition for last 3 years and I am very happy about it generally. Installed it so far on more than a dozen of PC’s and laptops and never had any problems with it untill the number 4.8 came up.
The same problem happen to two of my laptops (Toshiba & Compaq), both running win xp home, and a DELL PC.
Programs were set up to automatically update virus definitions and program itself.
Avast than updated itself to 4.8, I rebooted tle laptops & PC and… nothing. Loading time until the desktop appeared was nearly 10 minutes, and I must mention that my computers are prety new and all have at least 1Gb of RAM, fast processor speed.
I coudln’s access start menu, Task manager, nothing. What I had to do was restart into a safe mode, unistall avast. Install 4.7 last build and disable automati program updates. And I am back to normal. But I’d like to use 4.8 still…
What should I do?
Please help me.
Thanks

Pavel

Try the beat version which is currently 4.8.1178, this seems stable and may overcome the problem you had with the 4.8.1169 regular release of avast. If that doesn’t work for you then you could take a step back to 4.7 and monitor the forums about the current beta version.

avast beta 4.8.1178, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=34612.0 for information and link to aswbeta.exe which starts the conversion to the beta build.

I had the same issue… My 32bit XP started freezing (or behaving real slow) for some reason and I had to get some stuff done, I booted to my 64bit XP which I seldom use. It was working fine until I installed 4.8 at which point it stopped working too. I uninstalled Avast and it’s working dandy.

I’m going to try the beta now and see how it goes.

I wonder what the common factor is?

I’m happy to say 4.8 beta seems to be working fine.
