Avast 4.8 problems with updating

Every time I get this red popup saying there was an error while updating. It’s quite annoying because it doesn’t go away unless you click it (even when there’s a fullscreen application running)… It says click here for info, but when you click it, it just goes away and nothing happens. So I tried downloading the VPS update straight from the website. But when I run it I get another error…

Error

Can't install VPS update. Please, report following errorcodes:
Ver:4.8.1169
SI: 0x00000002
ST: 0xFFFFFFFF
LE: 0x00000000

It’s not like the error codes look like they make sense, but still :stuck_out_tongue:

did you already try to repair your installation?

if that doesn’t help, you could try to reinstall the program:

uninstall → run the uninstall utility → restart → install again

the uninstall utility can be found there:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

I don’t have a repair option in the instal program. But I’ve got the same problem on another computer which is also in my local network. This one has XP Pro x64 running, but the other one is just an XP Home edition… I thought it might have to do with ports being opened/closed on my router’s firewall. I read somewhere in the FAQ that 12080 TCP should be opened? But I guess that still doesn’t mean that I should get this error when I manually install it…

After you clicked avast from add/remove program, try roll your mouse to down and it must be there.

Doesn’t work. I’ll just uninstall, reinstall i guess…

update: Reinstalling Avast made it work…, but now I’m wondering if it’s going to happen again. Because when I installed it before, the first update went normally. Ever since the first one it’s been beeping red popups… I still think it’s strange I’m getting the same problem on two computers, but perhaps it was just my firewall blocking 12080. Any ideas? Should I close 12080TCP or leave it open?

Well… your installation is not good if there isn’t such an option… ::slight_smile:

Which is your operational system?
I think you need to change nothing in XP\Vista…
