Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log)… seems that you don’t have access to the files (error 5).

Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

Hi, I have the same problem. My Pc is Pentium II with 128 MB ram and same versions of windows and avast. There isn’t any other antivirus. The only others things installed are office 2000, acrobat reader 5 and bsplayer.
My log file is essentially the same. Really would appreciate any solution. Thanks in advance.

Jorge

Well… the log was inconclusive as it was NOT the latest lines of it…
Your log can be the same… each computer a different log and situation.
We can’t help further without knowing what is happening…

sorry, i forgot to explain what i did.
I did a plain repartition, format and reinstall of SO, installed office 2000, acrobat, and bsplayer and, finally tried to install avast spanish. Finished with the error. Reinstalled, same result. Uninstalled with the uninstaller downloaded from the web, and reinstalled again. Same result. Rename the folder of avast and installed the english version.
Success. (Half of success) But, when i tried to run the program it complained about missed dlls. I copied all dlls from spanish version and then another quarter of success. Now the program run but can’t update. Same old error. It says that has been denied access, trying to update the vpu file, in win98 who doesn’t enforce this right for users. Seems like another process had it opened “rw, deny all”.
TIA again.

Jorge

Which avast version were you trying to install?
Were you installing in the default path? Both of the setups?

Manually copying files won’t help. I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

Just thought to say that I have the beta version 4.8. 1263 and it updates fine on Windows 98 S.E

Well there is a beta refresh out now, version 4.8.1266.

I believe we’ve already seen a similar problem before… it’s rather strange, seems to be caused by Win9x disk drivers or something similar. When avast! tries to save a big file to disk (such as the VPS package, which grew quite a lot over the past few months), and it tries to save it in one big call - the operation fails. When this one big write is split into several smaller ones, it’s saved successfully…

I also suggest to update to the latest beta - I believe the workaround should be included there.

;D beta seems to have done the trick thanks again and keep up the good work ;D

I’m getting the same error trying to install Avast for the first time. It won’t write to the program files folder (I posted in a separate topic). My problem is that I can’t use the beta since I can’t get the program to install at all. I’ve already tried running the Uninstall utility.

Well, you might find an older avast! version somewhere on the net, install it (hopefully successfully), and then update it to the beta.
Or, if you wait for a few days, the final update should be released.

Old versions: http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

That would have been my next option (or waiting for the beta) but I managed to install it booting into safe mode (so I’m assuming some program was running that was blocking it). I couldn’t get it to update - same problem as the OP, but I updated to the latest beta and it’s working fine.

Thanks!
