Avast 4-Error 42000-HELP!

For 2 days now I’ve been trying to download the avast 4. every time I try to run a scan I immediately get
“Unknown Error”
scan completed with error
4200 = unknown error

Running XP sp2. No other AV running. Can someone please help me, in laymen’s terms plesae?
Thanks

You were trying to download avast… Did you save the file to the HDD and install it?
I know it’s silly but I’m not sure…
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

Hi Tech,
Yes, downloaded it and I’ve tried to repair as well, connected to the internet. When I downloaded I may not have saved, i may have just chose to open.

It will be better safe the setup.exe.
Anyway: will this help?

Sorry to sound like an idiot, but I’m just not THAT computer literate…a little but not too much. So, regarding your reply

What do you mean by “It will be better safe the setup.exe.”?

Second, regarding the first topic you linked, no, computer restart does not help, and how do I know if i have enough memory and if not can i fix it?

Third, regarding the second topic you linked, I have no idea what they are talking about. Sorry. All Greek to me.

All i know is I have no AV scanner and I need help.

I think what technical means is download and save the set up file to disc rather than use run from current location.

I’ll give it another try by saving.

I uninstalled, AGAIN, reintalled by saving the file instead of opening it and I am getting the same message as above. This is very frustrating.

Sorry mckelly, it’s on the border of my knowleadge… I can only ask for extra help from the programmers…
I have no idea on how to solve this, it’s frustrating…

Maybe if you post more info about your computer:
If you use a firewall, which one…
How much memory (RAM) do you have?
Are you trying to install avast from an administrator account or just a limited user…
Well, anything you guess that could guide us…

128 RAM
administrator…i’m the only user
Pentium (R) 4
Windows Firewall

I dont know what else to tell you. Another thing that happend, after I reinstalled by saving the file, only the ball with the “a” in it shows up, no ball with the “i” in it as before.

I’ve pretty much given up. After the last reistall and repair attempt, etc., I’ve installed AVG. Unless this can be resolved, I will use it. I liked avast better, i will say, but if I cant get it to work I have to use another. Still interested in a solution if you can find one.

Yikes! You’re running XP with 128 MB of RAM? Wow…I’m surpised anything works!

Actually, yes, and everthing has been working great, except Avast 4.
