When I scan my computer and a virus is found Avast stops scanning waiting for a response. How can I set the scan to continue automatically until all files are scanned?

No, only in Professional version automatic on-demand scanning is available.
In Home version you can only use Silent Mode with Internet Mail provider and Outlook/Exchange plugin.
You can do the same for Standard Shield provider, but it won’t be a good idea…
