I am trying to update my virus by manual download of the virus file Avast32.vps, but the program doesn’t recognise the file. It seems to use one called 400.vps.
What am I doing wrong

avast32.vps is the virus database for avast 3, not 4. If all you want to do is to update an offline machine, use vpsupd.exe. For more info please see e.g. http://www.avast.com/forum/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=188;start=0 .
