AVAST 5.0.507 hangs up on every boot up

Searched the boards and could not find the same problem posted
Forgive me if I overlooked a thread…

I am using XP pro SP3
I was using Version 4.XXX.XXX (free version) for some time now and never had this issue

Upgraded to 5.0.507 Free version
Download went smoothly

ISSUE:
Now everytime I boot up the AVAST ICON on the tray has a yellow triangle on top of it with an explanation mark inside

I right click the ICON and open up the user interface

Everytime it says that the Mail Shield & the Web shield are not turned on
I try to click them on to no avail

I have to wait about 2 minutes and the yellow triangle is gone and now the two shields(Mail Shield & the Web shield ) are active

I can now access the web

This happens everytime

BTW- I did go into the control panel /add remove and tried “Repair” on Avast-still the problem

Any guidance would be appreciated

Thanks for great software

A long time ago I wrote something like this and it’s still happening in my sister’s computer.

She has a Windows Vista Ultimate Computer with 4 G RAM, and it still happens that when she starts the computer, she has to wait for 2 or 3 minutes for Avast starting to work with the little triangle there.

I remember that sombody says that it was something about the computer to find and Ip availiable to start and that it was corrected before, but I think that 2 or 3 minutes to wait for Avast is too much.

It is still happening, I stopped insisting on that time because I think this is not an Avast problem, since I see that Avast Starts to work till the wirless conection is detected.

I did everything to correct the problem and I was not able to find the solution…rm

Any more ideas?
Rick

I’ve noticed it takes awhile when I boot up before the mail shield activates. This doesn’t strike me as a problem, it’s probably dependent on some other startup activity/activities taking place beforehand. Since I’m probably not going to open the email client until the bootup is complete, this is acceptable.

  1. I would recommend a CLEAN install of v.507 or v.533 (beta).

  2. Prior to a clean install, make sure you follow the correct instructions posted on the forum re: removal of Avast > Control Panel > Add/Remove > Reboot > go into Safe Mode and run the Avast Uninstaller tool > Reboot. I recommend going back into Safe Mode again > Click Search All Files/Folders in Advanced/Hidden File Mode - Type in Avast > see if Prefetch folders or anything else pops up and delete them. When in doubt, right click on it to see what it is. It’s not uncommon for a folder to remain behind but it will have zero files in it.

  3. Clean your PC up prior to reinstalling (get rid of junk files; defrag, etc.).

  4. What other software do you have on Start Up (look in your bottom tool bar) on boot up? Do you have a firewall or other resident software running PRIOR to Avast?. You can alter this with a Start up Manager.

  5. It would be helpful if you could update your signature so that we know what you have on your PC (see mine and others as an example) so we can better help you. Thanks.

Same problem here.
Tested already on several computers. I am using XP SP3.

I noticed that after installing Avast 507 on clean windows, my systray icons for ethernet and wireless connections are waiting several minutes and then show up. Only after they start Avast cleans yellow exclamation triangle and shows all shields started.
Now, when I deinstall Avast and reboot, my network icons still waiting severalminutes to show. Until that I am not able to connect to network.
So, seems that Avast spoils something.
Before installing Avast my network worked fine and immediatelly after booting I was able to connect.

Zoran

The latest final build is 5.0.545…! Please update and see if problems are fixed.
