Avast 5.0 and Intensive PC Gaming

I’ve been a die-hard Avast fan for quite some time. I still am. However, I do have to relate some issues that I had over the weekend. I am not clear/sure that the issues are related to the new Avast 5.0 or not. However, they haven’t happened before.

At least 3 times over the weekend, I had PC games crash with a blue screen and automatically re-boot my machine. It was 2 different PC games, both very graphic and cpu intensive. At least once, upon re-boot, Avast would not load. (It had a yellow exclamation point and I tried to enable the resident protection and it would not load.) Another re-boot seemed to fix the Avast resident protection.

Last night, I did successfully play one of the games that blue-screened earlier after I set Avast to “gaming mode” and it did not blue screen.

Again, I don’t know if these were related to Avast 5.0 or not. Is anyone else is having similar issues. Any other PC gamers out there running Avast 5.0?

Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly can I send to Alwil to help me determine if indeed these crashes were related to Avast 5.0?

First of all - what is the exact build of avast! you are using? 5.0.396?
During the bluescreens, corresponding minidumps should have been created in C:\Windows\Minidump folder - do you see them there? (files with the corresponding timestamp)

I very much appreciate your very quick response. (I didn’t expect a response so fast.) I am currently at work, but will be home within the next hour or so. Once I return home, I will respond with my current build (it should be the most up to date build) and if I have minidump files. Assuming that I do have them, do I upload them somewhere? (Again, please forgive my ignorance.)

I am using Avast 5.0.396. I have one minidump file. However, it is dated 1/24/2010. There appears to be nothing from this weekend. That is quite odd as I had at least 3 blue-screens this weekend.

Igor, any additional thoughts? Where can I upload my minidump file?

you can upload it there:
ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming/

Again, my apologies for my ignorance. I am using FireFTP add-on for Firefox. I can log in fine to the ftp site and I can even see the “incoming” folder. However, when I attempt to upload the minidump file, I obtain the following error: “553 Could not create file. : /incoming/Mini012410-01.dmp” Can you please tell me what I am doing wrong?

the simplest way is to open the site in Internet explorer, and then from the “page menu”, click on “open ftp site in windows explorer”, then you juts do a drag and drop.

My apologies again. I attempted what you suggested and received the following error:

What am I doing wrong?

Well the minidump from Jan 24 won’t be too helpful anyway (it must have been with the 377 build, which indeed had all sorts of BSOD issues).

One possibility is that the program update from 377 to 396 didn’t quite work out. What about trying to uninstall avast, download the latest build (396) and installing it from scratch?

Thanks
Vlk

What am I doing wrong?

read my last post again, you’re attempting to drop the dump file directly in Internet Explorer when you should have, as I said, open the page menu in IE, and click on "open ftp site in windows explorer…
