Avast 5.0 Free can not connect to server

Help please, I am new to using Avast.
I got my activation key entered, checked to make sure my firewall accepted Avast.
I have windows Vista home edition

I clicked on the update and it started updating then got the error
cannot connect to server download 869.avast.com

I am on dial up, and have it check to automatically detect settings

I also tried it with unchecking the dial up option and l get the error
cannot connect to server 668.avast.com

In the same screen, avast Settings, Updates, Update Parameters, set it to I only connect to the internet using dial-up, set the Proxy Settings to Direct connection (no proxy), assuming that you don’t use a proxy to connect.

However, if you are getting this is happening on a manual update it sounds more like firewall blocking (even though you say it is allowed).

Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

Thank you I changed the setting on the Proxy, to say no proxy
and it looks like it is updating now.
I’ll return to let you know if it completed the update.
I can’t thank you enough, at least right now it is updating

my updating is still going so I would say this has fixed my problem
thank you again

No problem, glad I could help.

Welcome to the forums.

I’m really liking avast!, but was concerned when the updates were failing due to the server error noted here. Based on info in this topic, it was simply a matter of going to Settings → Updates → Proxy Setting, and selecting 'Direct Connection" instead of “Auto Detect”. Working great now. Thanks for the info.

You’re welcome, good to see someone using the forum search function ;D
