It looks like you are bumping into the avast self-defence module protecting avast files from deletion/modification as it does with other outside applications.
Open the avast UI:
Click the ‘Settings’ button, top right
From the ‘Troubleshooting’ section uncheck ‘enable self defence module.’
Now run the vpsupd.exe and let us know if that resolves the problem ?
Don’t forget to enable the self-defence module when completed.
yes,i try to close the self protection as you said ,no error message pop up,but it said VPS database is already up to date, but my avast ui still 100309-0
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. This has in the past resolved this out of sync issue between reported and actual virus definitions version.
It’s ok now! i restart my laptop and run the offline updater, then restart laptop again !the avast ui display VPS database is up to date!
I think that problem is sovled, but i still can not automatic update through proxy! i don’t know why like this,i can open internet page through that proxy and befor 4.8 version also no problem!

Have you entered it in the avast Settings, Update, Proxy Settings - click the inverted triangle to expand the details, Specific proxy server and set the server details and any authentication if required.
Yes, but what is the proxy for, e.g. “This block is used as private address space.” so if private, perhaps there are security elements for said privacy that may block the avast update. ?
This part of the setup log appears to say that there is no authentication (when you say you entered authentication details in your last post) SYNCER: Auth: no authentication.
Yes,this proxy is saudi AROMCO company private proxy, there are some security elements to block some website.but the problem is i can update avast 4.8 use same proxy and same authentication just 2 days before .Also ,i use IE explorer to download the "severs.def.vpx"file ,it is sucessful! so, i want to know why version 5.0 can not update? Is there something which is different from 4.8 makes the proxy block the updating? or some setting need change
I don’t know as I don’t use any form of company or private proxy, so I don’t know what the interaction might be.
I don’t really know if there are slight differences in the 4.8 and 4.0 proxy handling but in this instance for what ever reason it isn’t able to pass the authentication.
Once your private proxy is up and running are you able to do a manual update via the avast UI, Maintenance, Update, Update engine and virus definitions ?
If so it may be that at the time of the auto update the proxy isn’t established so it fails, so it may be worth delaying the auto update check, more on how to do that if you say you are able to do a manual update.
Hello. I confirm update problems of version 5.0 with proxy authorization on some proxy servers.
I have ‘Traffic Inspector 1.1.4’ software installed on home server (OS: windows 2000 prof sp4) and there was no problems with updating where i had avast 4.6 - 4.8 installed, neither on server, nor on home workstations.
After avast 5.0 installation, build 5.0.462, there’s a problem with update (program and virus database) through my proxy server. I’ve got a sequence of network connections which avast did, here is:
All three connections are waiting infinitely (till proxy server timeout), cause of attempt of non-authorized connection.
If i try to release (delete) that connections, avast starts to make new connection(s) WITH authorization parameters i’ve entered in avast user interface. I noticed short-time connection to “downloadNNN.avast.com” with browser “Syncer/5.00 (ais-462;p)”, it’s hard to write query parameter of that connection.
After last connection it writes that database was updated (no changes needed).
Is this information sufficient to localize update problem?
Can i configure avast to update it properly?
P.S. OS: Windows 2000 Prof sp4; update parameters: proxy authorization, ip 192.168.87.100 (local ip), protocol: http, authorization: plain with login/password. Http proxy worked properly with avast 4.6 - 4.8; it also works properly with any other network software.
Greetings I hope this is on topic…i have been searching this forum so I can add my 2 cents in the right area (sorry if I have posted in the wrong place).
I get a similar issue but Error Http 403.
I am using a squid proxy, with authentication. I have setup proxy details into Avast 5.
In Squid I have created different users with different access levels.
“Admin” account has full proxy access, no restrictions.
“update” account has only access to Avast useragents (AVAST4.8,Syncer/4.80,(av_pro-1368;f)
AVAST5.0,Syncer/5.00,(ais-507;p) which I had to enter manually into Squid
From what I can see, when I set Avast proxy to use “update” i get the 403 error.
I adjusted Avast to use “Admin” (which is also my normal windoze a/c name) I can update no problems.
I do not get any problems updating my clients who have 4.8 installed, it is only the 5 versions that fail.
SO my question is; What useragents does AVAST5 NEED to perform a successful update via my squid proxy??
5 was updating ok, but it broke when updating to 5.0.507. I DL’d the new version and it broke again from 5.0.545. I do not want to download a whole new install version of Avast 5 everytime. Clients MUST use the restricted “update” account to DL updates.
Can someone please provide a solution?? Does this also help with the OP?
Avast have made changes to thier updater and they cannot even support it…
Cleary in Avast 4.8 I could update via Proxy using a different windoze user then the one I am logged on as (basically created a user just with internat access but only using Avast syncer update agent) it appears now that Avast 5 no longer uses that Update agent but maybe requires IE instead and full internet access - which is not an option here, I don’t want my clients to have full internet access just so they can update AV.
Syncer in Avast 5 is broken, its been a good last 2 years but soo long Avast, its a pity I was enjoying the product. First it was Avira now Avast too…
Hopefully Comodo have support who understand their product better.
