Avast 5 causing BSODs on windows 7 ultimate and professional x86 32-bit

Hi there.

I have 2 PC, both running windows 7 x86 32-bit. One is running professional and other runs ultimate version.
On both PCs I have avast 5 free av installed (newest version of program and virus signatures db). On both Avast is causing the BSODs, actually whoCrashed tool is reporting that some software driver regarding to Avast free av is the cause. On one i already switched to Avira and the BSODs are gone but on other (as crashes weren’t that often) i thought to leave it as is, hoping that in the next program update this will be fixed. But, it seems that this issue continued to exist.

Just as a info, on the XP home and pro avast 5 worked like a charm!

Can someone from the Alwil software tell me and the community is this incomparability or stability issue noted and are there plans of fixing it? I really like Avast, and somehow I get use to it, but if this situation persists I’ll be forced to leave Avast and chose some other AV solution.

Ty in advance.
Dean

please send me all the latest minidumps (\Windows\Minidump folder) from both computers to kurtin@avast.com

You didn’t specify, but I’m going to bet you are installing the latest (5.1.889). My experience is that version doesn’t play nicely with Win7. Not sure what the magic variable is that triggers problems, because some people in these forums do appear to have it working, but the volume of “doesn’t work for me” threads is steadily growing. If you have access to an installer a couple of revisions back (one of the ones from fall 2010), you could try:

  1. download avast cleaner app if you don’t have it
  2. reboot to safe mode
  3. uninstall avast
  4. reboot
  5. install old avast version

That worked for me.

Doing that doesn’t resolve or help to resolve the problem, it just sidesteps the issue.

Here dolke has the perfect opportunity to help both himself and other avast users. Here is one of the avast developers asking for mini dump files to help get to the bottom of the problem and help resolve it.

I know which direction I would be moving.

Ty all for reading my post and taking the interest.

Ty “phenomfiend” for the suggestion but as “DavidR” said, and I agree, this is not permanent solution for the issue.
There are probably reasons why there is new version of Avast Av, better engine, improved scanning performance and so on. I really hope that people from Alwil software will investigate into the situation and that we can expect this stability issue fixed in some upcoming program updates. At the end ty for the tutorial, if nothing its good to know that there is Avast that works on windows 7 with no problems

Mr. Kurtin email with the recent dump files has been sent.

You’re welcome, hopefully your dump files will help PK in his investigation into the problem and help resolve it.
