Avast 5 requires license key FILE - I've only got a free registry code

Hi,

my evaluation period on avast 5 is up (i.e. currently “locked”), I have registered for a free license and got an email with a license key on the format of XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXX. But avast wants me to add a license via a file. Why is that?

I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling according to a suggestion in another thread in this fora: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=60223.msg510014#msg510014

The result is the exact same as before.

What am I doing wrong? How shall proceed to get my free avast 5 copy unlocked?

Hi brunobrun,

do you have uninstalled IS5 and then installed avast! 5 FREE? Normally you must then only register in the ui again. As i know, you don’t become then a register-email, it is at the moment registered.

Hi Brunobrun and welcome to the forum.

One problem, you are allowed only one evaluation period. So you need to have either the Free, Paid or AIS version of Avast. If you wish to have the Free, then you need to get a license for the Free version.

Normally, you need to cut and paste (copy) the Key that you received from the email and insert it into the Avast GUI main Summary page that says Register Now…see the link on how to do this while you are on the Internet: http://support.avast.com/index.php?languageid=1&group=eng&_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=459. However it sounds like the Key you received was for another trial and that is why you are locked, if I understand correctly.

Since your trial period is over, you will need to register as a new customer for the Free version. You will receive a Free version Key and that is the Key you need to insert in the Avast GUI Summary page where it says Register Now when you are on the Internet.

If you have further difficulties, it is possible that since your trial period is over, you may need to uninstall and reinstall Avast:

  1. Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.545).
  2. Save the http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility on your hard drive.
  3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
  4. Uninstall Avast through “Add/Remove Programs”.
  5. Boot into Safe Mode and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
  6. Reboot twice.
  7. Clean your computer up.
  8. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot twice.
  9. Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.
  10. Register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro or AIS.
