Avast 5 will not update

Hi all,

I’m in the process of reinstalling two desktops with Windows XP Home, so far so good.

Installed Avast free edition on both machines, both installed fine.

Here is the problem, on the one machine all is fine, updated and working how it should but on the other Windows Security says that Avast is out of date.

I go into Avast settings, Maintenance and update and it says that the current version is 100628-0 and that the virus definitions are out of date. I click on “update engine and virus definitions”, it attempts to update and then it comes up with “Already up to date (current version 100806-0)”. When I click on the button “OK” it takes me back to the “current version is 100628-0 and that the virus definitions are out of date”

So Avast is saying it is up to date and at the same time it’s not up to date!! Just going round in circles.

Both the computers are desktops but are different brands, both have XP Home freshly installed and all windows updates are installed. The date and time on both machines are also accurate.

Any help on this matter would be most appreciated,

Regards

After the manual update, reboot.

If that doesn’t work - Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. This has in the past resolved this out of sync issue between reported and actual VPS version.

First, many thanks for the quick reply.

It’s now updated and working, followed your instructions but when I clicked on “Repair” for the first time it came up with an error (didn’t make a note of error message unfortunately) but it did say to use the “Update (update components)” first, so I did, then I ran the repair again and now all is working fine.

Again, many thanks for your help, these minor problems can be very frustrating and time consuming to rectify.

Regards.

No problem, glad I could help.
